Were Did Your Family Name Originate ?

My family name is actually a city, ''Hammana'' is located on the west of Lebanon.
My grandpa once said that my ancestors came from lebanon, and had some kind of high status, that's why the city is still named after my family name...

The word "Hammana" may have come from the name of the Phoenician Sun God "Hammon" or "Hamman"( german soccer player lol ). These two names are derived from the word "Hama" which means heat of the sun in arabic.

So one of my ancestors was digging the ancient Egyptian Gods, and took the name of ''sungod'', after a couple of generations my family ended up in Lebanon and decided to stay at a little place in the mountains of Lebanon..... Well I guess that's were my family name orginated from..... Way back when the Egyptians stills were building pyramids, one person decided to name himself after the ''sungod''.. I wonder why, perhaps he had a reason, perhaps not...... well anyway that's my family name's origin..

My family name is Rana,the pakistani side of it.umm they are like one of the biggest families in ALL of pakistan,and we have like "subsideries" as well,if you wana put it like that,lol
but we go way back to the mughal empire and since then we've just grown,but our family has allways been strong in the military, i mean back when india and pakistan were together and were under british rule, the british military used to hire ppl from these families including the sikhs and all cause they were like fearless and reali reali ruthless,
its said that when ever they used to go to a war they used to kill their own family before they left! so that they didnt act like a distraction while they were away fightin...daym! ..yh i'm not exactly sure how that worked out after they came back but i guess they sorta moved on
but all thats in the past now half of us are doctors and big businessmen.
Thats ALL i know about my family and its origin

my family name Ezzido.well the most famous example is John Ezzidio a slave who came to become mayor, apparently my great great grandad..or sumpthn like dat

John Ezzidio (1810-1872)

John Ezzidio was a recaptive slave from Nupe, in Nigeria, who rose to become a wealthy merchant, the Mayor of Freetown, John Ezzidio and the first African elected to Sierra Leone's Legislative Council.

Ezzidio was kidnapped as a small child and taken south to the Yoruba country. In 1827, while in his teens, he was sold to white slave traders who put him on a ship bound for Brazil. But the British navy's Africa squadron captured the ship and released the "recaptives", including young Ezzidio, at the city of Freetown. The young man now began a new life as the apprentice to Jean Billaud, a French shopkeeper. Billaud called the former slave "Isadore", which gradually became pronounced as "Ezzidio".

John Ezzidio, bright, resourceful, and ambitious, took easily to the world of commerce. He worked for Billaud for several years and, after the Frenchman died, found employment with other local merchants. Within ten years, Ezzidio had saved enough money to begin his own business. By 1841, he had purchased land and built a house. In 1844, he became an alderman on the city council; and in 1845, the mayor of Freetown.

Ezzidio was active in the Wesleyan Mission as a class leader and local preacher. In the 1850s, Rev. Thomas Dove, the mission superintendent, took Ezzidio to England where he made contacts with large wholesale firms from which he began to import goods directly, without going through middlemen. By the 1850s, Ezzidio had built up one of the largest and most prosperous businesses in the colony. In 1863, after a constitutional change established the Legislative Council, Ezzidio was elected an unofficial member of the colony's mercantile community, defeating a European candidate. He was the first African to serve on the council and, because the British soon abolished the elective principle, he was the only African to be elected until that principle was reintroduced in 1924. Ezzidio served on the council from 1863 until the eve of his death in 1872, holding the title of "Honourable".

which is funny, because on the other side of my family (not the Roy side, my moms side) my grandmother is a descendant of Queen Elisabeth, and my grandfather is descended from Mary Queen of Scots.
