*Spoiler Alert*
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the series and I've liked it up to 4 when all my friends got bored of it, but 5 was so pointless. I did like the trap and it the 5 becomes 1 twist was well done, but it had no emphasis in the movie. In fact in the previous Saw movies, the main traps served a point in the story.
Saw I- Dr. Gordon & Associates- he diagnosed Jigsaw with cancer
Saw II- Amanda proves her worth
Saw III- Jigsaw tests Amanda (and Jeff, but mainly Amanda)
Saw IV- Basically every detective/person investigating Jigsaw is playing the game and dies (except Strahm and Hoffman of course).
Saw V- 5 random people who burned down a house. <- see what I mean? These characters aren't important at all and have no significance in the story.
But the worst thing is Saw V does not progress at all in the storyline. The whole movie was basically telling the audience how Hoffman helped Jigsaw in the first 4 movies. It's already obvious he's a traitor in the IV movie, we don't need a whole new movie to tell us exactly what he did. Lastly, the trailers said "You won't believe how it ends." and I find that highly ironic in two ways. First of all, it was by far the most predictable ending in the series. I mean I didn't predict the exact trap and the room closing, but it was extremely obvious that Strahm was going to refuse getting into the glass box and end up dying. The writers just go lazy on that one. Finally, if you look at the timeline of the whole series, Saw V does not further the story at all. The beginning of Saw IV was awesome, with Hoffman receiving a tape saying he will be tested as he is the last man standing, but Saw V did not address that at all! With all the commercials saying how it was going to end and all, I find it disappointing that the story didn't even progress.
To sum it up, Saw V was not important to the series at all, unless you want filler information, and it was simply released to rake in a lot of money. Hopefully Saw VI is the last one, because there's only so much you can stretch the story before it becomes lame and boring.
