lol, hip hop isn't dead and never will be. but most people, when people say hip hop, they look at mainstream, because they represent the state of it now.. and right now it does suck, well now its actually improving and getting stronger again, but 808 is no where by far top 5 albums of the year.

my choice would be The Last Chair Violinist by SPM. a couple songs were lame but it was still a really good album. every song is catchy basically. even the lame ones.
"Did you ever stop to think/I'm old enough to go to war but I ain't old enough to drink" - 2Pac

"It's time to let the truth be told/There ain't no brighter day/'Cause when it all unfolds/A n**** gon' just pass away/These haters tryna stop my grind/But I bet them hoes can't block my shine/So tired of takin' losses not this time/I can't save the whole world I'm just tryna look out for mine" - Z-Ro

FREE SPM!

Shit cant believe i forgot Termanology - Politics As Usual. Was def the best album of 2008, several tracks produced by Premo + wicked lyrics, one of my favorite albums :y:
"Hard hearted beast with a jaw full of meat
Engulfed in a feast while you starve at his feet
He toss you the least little portion of a piece
To the floor and expect you to rejoice when you eat" - Brother Ali

nas took the year on the official album scene, fuck sales or the catchyness ti has, nas's album was a better hip hop album in all aspects except for the fact ti has the pop culture influence on him.

ti's was dope but not the best. raw footage was a better overall album.

but even though its not an official album, akala's the war mixtape 2 shits on everything else last year, the amount of dope bars and the standard of his lyrics is at the highest i seen on anything at all, not to mention half or more was freestyles his versatility was un-real rapping on classic hip hop to techno to indie beats he tore all of them to shreds, keeping you entertained with every song having killer punchines and sick sick rhyming.

808s is a pop album, not rap AT ALL. Justin Timberlake's last album was way more hip hop than heartbreak, so if that counts as a hip hop album then so does chris brown
