Rihanna Album Sales Soar Post Chris Brown Incident

Postby Nick419 » Feb 19th, '09, 00:05

While this week's album sales were dominated by Grammy winners and big debuts by India.Arie and Lily Allen, there was one subplot playing out further down the chart: Rihanna vs. Chris Brown.

In the wake of a Grammy day altercation that left her in the hospital and him under arrest, Rihanna was embraced by a clearly sympathetic public. Sales of her 2007 album, Good Girl Gone Bad, surged 33 percent, selling another 25,000 copies at No. 31.

Meanwhile, Brown's 2007 album, Exclusive, continued to see sluggish sales, failing to register among the Top 200.

Otherwise, Grammy winners and performers soared...

Taylor Swift's Fearless moved 92,000 copies to climb to No. 1, while the Album of the Year winner, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand, shot up 67 spots to No. 2 on sales of 77,000, a staggering sevenfold increase over the previous week, per Nielsen SoundScan.

Also among the Grammy-boosted albums: Coldplay's quadruple-award-winning Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, up 23 spots to No. 8; Grammy Nominees 2009, up three to No. 9; Best New Artist winner Adele's 19, up 17 spots to No. 10; and sentimental favorite Jennifer Hudson's self-titled debut, up 17 spots to No. 30.

Meanwhile, India.Arie's Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics (No. 3 with sales of 75,000), Allen's It's Not Me, It's You (No. 5; 70,000) and Bobby Valentino's The Rebirth (No. 7, 64,000) scored the week's Top 10 debuts, while viral-powered comedic troupe Lonely Island—led by SNL star Andy Samberg—sold 48,000 copies of Incredibad at No. 13.

Thanks to the Grammy bumps, overall sales were up 17 percent compared to last week but still down 13 percent compared to the same week in 2008.

Here's a rundown of the Top 10 albums for the week ended Sunday:

1. Fearless, Taylor Swift
2. Raising Sand, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
3. Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics, India.Arie
4. The Fray, The Fray
5. It's Not Me, It's You, Lily Allen
6. Working on a Dream, Bruce Springsteen
7. The Rebirth, Bobby Valentino
8. Viva La Vida, Coldplay
9. Grammy Nominees 2009, Various
10. 19, Adele
