See, it's almost the same situation when we talk about Islam. We, the Europeans and Americans, we were born in the so called 'western', christian culture. Ever since you were born, you've been baptised and taught about what's good and bad, about how the world was created by the God, about Jesus and all that stuff you believe (or don't) right now. You're used to that lifestyle, to women walking down the streets with their faces uncovered, to eating pork and getting wasted every Friday. They're not, it's a different lifestyle, different culture and social relations, so we can't compare and think that everything 'out' there is bad and savage. It's just not relevant.

Somalis been doing it for centuries now and honestly, who the fuck are we to tell them it's wrong? It's wrong because WE thing it's wrong and totally-not-humane compared to our standards. I, too, feel bad about it and it really gave me chills when I found out about it some time ago, but: 1. it's not my culture, I don't understand it in the way they do, 2. even if I wanted to, I can't do anything. What, we're going to organise a demonstration and wave flags all around?

Maybe they are primitive, but it's not their fault. Africa is not the best place to live, especially in that region. They're just people trying to make the best out of what they got.

I agree its a different culture.... I live in India I know how the Islamic people live n to some extent and they have full right to what they wanna wear, how they wanna live etc etc.... but when it comes to torturing or anything like that even if it is part of the culture government here try to make that stop... at least they try to stop it and make the world a better place... so why can't they

Because you live in India and Muslims are minority there and they're under the goverment of India. In Somalia, Somalis are.. 97,3% to be exact.

i think its a very crude logic, some countries in places like this, firstly have no means to Begin advancement..most of them a crippled by civil wars and plagued by starvation. the slumdog's question is: which human being on earth woudnt like to live in a good home , have a nice neighbourhood and have all the best things in life?,
sometimes when the brightest of students pass their high skool exams their governments sends them abroad, to pursue better education, and once they DO see how the rest of the world lives who the fuck would want to go back, i have a somali in my university , he is a freshman and this dude broke all previous academic records for consistent GPA in the first 2 semesters, such a genius will /would NEVER go back,
heres another example, one of my friends who was born and raised in canda ( he is somali by birth) comes and meets me in dubai, and wants to visit somalia ( he had the feeling to see where his ancestors lived , the patriotic feeling) so he books his ticket and flies down to somalia, he steps down from his plane (a small twin turbo) and gets robbed upon landing! he has since then vowed never to return back.
regarding events that are culturally accpetable but inhumane or morally unacceptable , in india burning of the wife along with her husband was acceptable (sati), when india finally started to become urbanised people saw that this was an inhumane act and decided to get rid of such cultural events ( altho it is still practiced in some rural parts) , now say being the urban country that india is, it doesnt get rid of such an event, could you effectively "eliminate" india?
the idea is if you want to eliminate such events you firstly have to create awarness about it,( something along the lines of whats happening in this thread) , and then possibly take it on from there, how can you treat a problem which people dont know
