Classics

Postby James R. » Mar 26th, '09, 00:46

So I've been thinking about rap lately and there have been very few artists recently who have released CLASSIC albums, so I was thinking who has the most so far? This is how I see it:

Jay-Z (4 or 5) Reasonable Doubt, Vol 2 Hard Knock Life, The Blueprint, The Black Album, and maybe American Gangster

Eminem (3) SSLP, MMLP, and TES

50 Cent (2) Power of the Dollar and Get Rich or Die Tryin

The Game (1) The Documentary

Dr. Dre (2) The Chronic and 2001

The Notorious B.I.G. (2) Ready to Die and Life After Death

2Pac (3 or more) 2pacalypse Now, Me Against the World, and All Eyez on Me

I know I missed a TON, but drop what you tihnk.

The purpose of this thread was to see which artist/group have more classic albums, not which album you think is classic LOL.

@ X-Ray- Platinum and Gold status doesn't = classic. Tha Carter III went triple I think. Not a classic.

@ Tru- This is a completely opinion based thread. I don't think American Gangster is necessarily a classic, but some people think it's some of his best work. You can't even try to argue that any of the others aren't classic rap albums.

Also a classic (for me) is an album that in my eyes is timeless. There will never be a point when I can't turn on one of those albums I listed and have to skip even one song (skits don't count) so to me that's a classic. There's no definition for a classic just like there's no definition of "the best" it's all opinion. I do agree though, Obie hasn't dropped a classic. oh and neither has TI as much as I like some of his albums none of them are timeless.

TruEmFan wrote:And I don't know what the point of Xray's post was 'cause sales don't really mean much. I mean, look at Jay-Z. His most critically acclaimed album and most often deemed classic is Reasonable Doubt, the album he's sold the least of. (Oh, and I don't think Jay has that many classics. 4 or 5? Really? In no way is American Gangster a classic)

The time those albums were dropped a classic DID go platinum or gold at those times. It wasn't like now, where REAL hip hop is dead and the wack shit selling. I over did it with the Nas albums though I do admit. Nastradamus, Street's Disciple & Untitled weren't classics at all. But those other albums ARE classic.
