What Do You Prefer?

After fully understanding the concepts, and getting to appreciate the complexities of Eminem's rhyme sequences in Relapse, it's safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed the album.

However, with the release of the two new bonus tracks, coupled with Beautiful, I personally feel like I would have enjoyed an album with that type of material over Relapse.

There are many arguments about Eminem's amazing rhyme technique and so forth for Relapse, but simply put: I'm not as interested anymore in just hearing dope rhymes, I want substance and I want material. Deja Vu is the best song on the album, because of how personal it is.

So for me personally, my favorite Eminem songs are those "Cleaning Out My Closet," "Lose Yourself," content based songs--not so much the crazy rhyme songs (Though super mad props to Stay Wide Awake's second verse...holy shit!)

So what do you all prefer? Would you have wanted an album with 'King Mathers' type material, or did you love Relapse? Do you really want Eminem to be rapping as murdering, raping Slim Shady when he's 36?

I was very satisfied with Relapse.

However, i agree that i personally preferred Deja Vu, Beautiful and the 2 bonus tracks to the Slim Shady stuff. But that's just me. I'm still satisfied with the material on Relapse, and to be honest i'd prefer an equal mix of both as opposed to having one extreme or the other.

I definitely agree with being satisfied with Relapse, and a mix would have been great, my only slight issue is the fact that the album was SO dominated by slim shady and the same content, but once again I was satisfied. You make a good point that a mix would have been great, not extremes, I didn't really think about that.

I would love a whole album of songs like, Hello, Stay Wide Awake, Old Times Sake, Must Be The Ganja, Deja Vu, Beautiful, Underground, and the 2 bonus tracks Careful What You Wish For and My Darling...those are amazing tracks.

Yeah the Slim Shady stuff is entertaining, but sometimes it's harder to cause the right affect when the last 6 songs were about the same stuff.

If he had added a couple more deep tracks inbetween it would have spaced it out perfectly and would have resolved this tiny issue.

But as he said, he had his own idea of how he wanted Relapse set out so hey.

Alright OP, you're so wrong I don't even know where to start man. First of all, King Mathers never existed. The only person I can remember mentioning King Mathers is Cashis, and Cashis doesn't know anything. Cashis just says stuff so Eminem doesn't forget he exists.

Anyway, a mix would not have been good for Relapse. Relapse is saved by the fact that it has a theme to it that spans *almost* the entire album. I say almost because CAB is wack and doesn't belong anywhere. If Eminem didn't decide to go with a theme we'd have another Encore. TES was good because he had a theme. He didn't have a focused direction with Encore and thus, it was a bad album.

This is my long, honest, and correct opinion.

Now, I do kind of prefer the more serious songs like "Beautiful" and "Be Careful What You Wish For". Whether its true or not, I can't say, but I would love to hear a dark, sad album like King Mathers. He said he had a lot of material that he scrapped because it wasn't good enough. Maybe by good enough he meant that he was still writing "woe is me" songs that he was trying to get away from.

And I agree with the idea that a theme is desirable, but a drug/murder supported theme is not as desirable to me, as these "eminem" songs and not "slim shady." But I reiterate that I enjoyed Relapse.

Secondly, just because its an album thats drug theme heavy doesn't mean its not as real and sincere as his older albums. I believe if your hearing this album as a "Slim" album your not hearing it right. Yes there is songs in there that are Slim based such as "Stay Wide Awake" and "Insane".

But the album is a battle with Eminem and Slim, which I think My Darling shows.

I don't need to prefer one or the other, because I'm given both.

So thats my favorite Eminem hands down...we all will hear Kind Mathers eventually no matter what....with that being said all we have is R1 and R2 so thats all we can hear so i like and want that more....

I agree with the OP. The reason why Em always stood out is that he rapped about himself in a creative way. I think Deja Vu/Beautiful are the best songs on Relapse and both those songs don't have Slim Shady.

I can see how the "relapsing" theme helps Em focus but his Shady songs had such random rhymes that they had no substance and become cliche. I don't care if he used numerous mutlis, if he can't put together a good story/verse the song is weak.

I mean a Shady song is good every now and then but the darker/serious songs showcase Em's talent the best.

I disagree. How can you tell me 3 AM, Medicine Ball, Bagpipes from Baghdad are sincere and real? The only real and sincere songs are Deja Vu and Beautiful. This album is a Slim album...that's the whole point of the album, to bring back SSLP material.

As far as his age, there is actually a significance to it. Because at 36 years old, Eminem fans, or at least I--am certainly looking for more an amount of maturity in him, because you can only have shock value and be funny for so long...I personally think We Made You didn't do well because 1) the accent was annoying, and 2) people are just bored of the same old same old

Good point, i hadn't thought that a mix would make the album seem aimless.

The only song i liked was my darling and no, i prefer the tracks on relapse because it's lyrically better than songs like careful what you wish for or my darling.
