Dre killed at least 80% of the beats he did on Relapse.
My Top 5 (in no order)-

Eminem
Big l
Biggie Smalls
Royce Da 5'9"

Yeah he did but his beats are always just recycled and he drums are loud as fuck. Because he's essentially used to producing Gangsta beats. So his beats tend to drown out Em's voice a lot.

Wheras Em's beats are perfect melodies to his raps because he gets the tune in his head and writes to it.

I think Em is a better producer. The Way I Am, Soldier, Renegade - All so much more accomplished beats than Dre's and more interesting.

Dre usually just steals someone's piano beat and adds some loud as fuck West Coast drums and squeeks.

Em's however are usually unique melodies, cite: Lose Yourself, they have fresh piano or chord tracks in them and they're completely original. And they're usually full of more strings and notes than drums and flow with his voice perfectly. And more clearly.

And to the guy who said he probably won't produce anything on R2, I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Em recently said in an interview that there may end up more tracks produced by him on it.

I don't agree with you saying that he just nicks things off people, i mean alot of the time he samples things, but his mixing is so damn good, it ends up coming out as a bigger and better beat than before.

And i definitly disagree that Ems a more accomplished producer, Dre's come up with so many killer beats over the years for so many people. While Em seems to turn it up for the few songs he produces for himself, they're usually the same kind of sounds, it's sick, but he's not really that creative with it. Also he is very inconsistent, i mean half of the stuff i've heard him do for other artists have been average at best, but that's ok because he admits himself that he's still learning.

It's just beats like "Hello", Em described it as "Alien" and beyond his thinking as far as producing. And i agree, i can't imagine Em coming up with anything like that. I know what you mean with the loud drums, but i think it's in proportion. On Hello the drums are so epic and loud, but for some reason it goes with the vocals, and rather than distracting from them, you just admire the contrast of the slow swaying beat to the slick rapping.

I mean Em didn't produce Lose Yourself on his own, he was co-creator. I'm guessing the other guy that had more musical knowledge as far as instruments and that mainly came up with the indepth details like the piano intro, while Em came up with the general feel of it, and would've just pissed about with different chords with limited knowledge til he liked what he heard.

One thing Em seems to do is find a bit of music he likes, then he loops it. Like with the Way i Am, Lose yourself, and Soldier. Which gives it more energy and continuity, which matches Em's flow, as he rarely leaves gaps in his major songs. However Dre is able to make a beat that is so simple in it's creation, but so effective in it's sound.

Yes Em can't play the instruments but Lose Yourself for example was completely his melody.

Even the guy who created it with him Luis Resto said it was Em's melody.

That's why Em's flow always go so perfect with his beats because he thinks of the melody, writes to it then hums it for the piano player to play. So it is basically his entire creation, the piano player just outputs it.

I don't agree that Dre is better. I think he's just thought of as that because he's been around for longer and of course has produced great stuff like The Chronic. But songs on that and a lot of his stuff sample about 5 tracks each. It's not creative it's just tweaking.

And stuff like Kill You, he hasn't really done much with it. He's stolen the entire beat and just added drums and slightly changed the speed and key lol.

I think The Way I Am, Soldier and Renegade are SO much more interesting than anything Dre has produced. Especially The Way I Am. It's so atmospheric, Dre rarely produces stuff of this calibre IMO.

And Square Dance... Just so much more ear catching. It's all subjective of course but for me at least that's the case.

My main qualm with the discussion is just simply this. When Em has produced like a whole CD, like with Obie, the beats in their quantity have been average.

It has been on the odd song he's produced on each album that's been sick, but only a couple of each 20 track album.

While Dre manages to produce 70% usually of these CD's, and his beats would generally stay dope.

I think if you said to Em, "right, produce your whole album", i think bar like a song or two, the production would be average. Em is rarely called upon to he can be really creative, whilst Dre produces for so many artists for so many years, and people moan that some of his beats sound similar or whatever.

But as you said, it's down to opinion.

yea!!! i am pumped for the second installment now!!!!!!

No, that's not how it was done. He did not make Relapse first and then start working on Relapse 2. He made three albums worth of material and then out of those songs he chose the best songs for both albums. He was making Relapse 1 and Relapse 2 at the same time.
