I love his old flow better- nasaly, over the new accents, and the song concepts & lyrics are amazing. Relapse is nice, but the concepts are strange on some songs, including Insane & Bagpipes From Baghdad, compared to tracks on the SSLP. What do you think? Opinions on the subject & comparisons with the flow, subject matter & lyrics from Em.

Chasingtimeagain wrote:I agree with the OP. SSLP is a great album - in Relapse, Em sounds desperate for laughs and shocking lyrics while in SSLP/MMLP it's more natural. Sure his flow may be better in Relapse but substance is lacking. Every song is almost got him raping a girl who's name end's with an "a" sound.
Also, the flow in We Made You is a lot better than My Name Is but We Made You is a crappy song at best. The hook is horrible/overly poppy, and Em's verses again seem desperate for laugh.
In addition, the first single was a fresh concept with My Name Is, but doing it over (ex. Just Lose it and We Made You) shows his lack of growth in style.
Good post tho

Respect what you're saying, but could some of that be down to this being the first album we heard Slim on? I mean these were the first ones we ever heard. If we didn't have the originals that, by some, are seen as untouchable because of them being in the opening fresh stage of his career.. And we just had Relapse.. Then we'd be amazed by his humour and wit. The new are always going to be put against the old, and the old have always had the chance to become set in stone as our favourites. That's one of the reasons why people discredit anything today as being able to wipe the shoes of past music, it's longetivity and the rule of the originals.

Oh, I totally agree on that. It's not like when I first heard SSLP/MMLP that I thought they were classics instantly. But as the OP said, songs like "Insane" and "Bagpipes" really point at some weaknesses. Then again there are other songs that show his growth/lyricism.

Chasingtimeagain wrote:I know what you mean, people say " Insane was the fucking shit". I'm like "yeah...um, no".
I believe what Em's best at is songs like "Deja Vu" or "Beautiful" (and it shows). He is able to put people in situations and explain unique stories.
I personally would love an album filled with more serious songs like Deja Vu (a mix of comedy and drama, a great hook, and no accents). But since Em said "Relapse 2 is a continuation" I feel like it's gonna be in the same genre as "3 a.m." and "Same Song and Dance".
How could u not like it lol. It's pure crazy Shady.

I love you Daren

but I was listening to SSlP the other day and I enjoyed more, But to me Relapse tops it.

I actually don't agree with that. Sure in certain pictures you can look young or old. But I don't think he looks 11 or 12 years older. Some people that are Em's age really do look like old men. I think that if Old em and new em were together, people might guess they are a few years apart. Like for me, 12 years ago I was completely different. this is TWELVE years! Em really doesn't look a full 12 years older in my opinion. He does look more mature though. But he looks very healthy.

RealSickLindley wrote:To be honest i love SSLP, but i think he's evolved way past that. It's a sick album, and obviously rock bottom is real shit. But on that i think he was a bit of a punchline rapper. He was like Luda, having alot of quotables, and having a nice flow, but what you waited for was the metaphor or wordplay at the end of the bar.
However on Relapse his ryming is just above everyone else, i mean most of the verses are packed with multi's and internals, and don't have a single gap for breath in them.
Easiest to compare-
We Made You vs My Name is
Production is more complicated (and better in my opinion) on WMY.
The lines are nice, but anyone could rap MNI, however even with the lyrics in front of you, it takes a few goes to flow WMY perfectly.
His uncuth sense of humour has matured, now being able to rip people without saying they'll "rip their tits off".
