Irv Gotti Says...

...Jay-Z Is A Better MC Than Eminem

"Who is the best? Who would win in a battle? It's a hypothetical conversation that hip-hop fans have every day about their favorite spitters.

We here at MTV News have a great time debating the "Hottest MCs in the Game" (check for that '09 list coming sooner than you think — controversial!), and in October, Vibe magazine put out their list of the Greatest Rappers Alive. More than 920,000 fans voted on tournament brackets, in which different MCs would face each other in dream rap matches.

Irv Gotti came by the MTV offices and spoke to us about the list recently. Although he wasn't as adamant as Joe Budden was about the list being wrong, IG took exception to Eminem ranking in the top spot.

"I got a thing with Eminem," Gotti said. "This has nothing to do with the beef. I don't really feel like I have beef with Eminem. This has no hatred or nothing. This is just my opinion on it. Vibe did a thing, and they had him as the #1 rapper. Sh-- like that kinda pisses me off. You know why? Because let's take Eminem's records. Watch my analogy. Eminem is a great artist, no doubt. He puts words together, he's witty, a smart lyricist, a great lyricist. But how can we say the guy is the best rapper alive? Look at Hov. He makes real records. Every one of Eminem's first singles is some clown sh--. He's clowning. Is that the #1? That's not my #1 rapper, man."

Gotti said he also factored in the battle element in deciding that Jay-Z is better than Em. He said that back in the day, Slim Shady wouldn't have a chance against a young Jay — or DMX and Ja Rule, for that matter.

"No disrespect, you're a great lyricist, but I come from a school — I know they 'battled' in '8 Mile' — but I come from where they battled on the streets with guns out," the head of Murder Inc. said. "They would have put you under pressure. All that 'off the top,' they would have put you under pressure. I been to battles with X, Jay and Ja, that was some real sh--. Homie, you wouldn't been able to survive. These n---as was going with written sh--. In your grill. X [would say,] 'I don't walk, I stalk, living foul.' Saying some sh-- you wouldn't been able to withstand."

Gotti said Em would survive in a cipher with the big dogs.

"You would have been like, 'My name is Em and I eat M&Ms. I eat you.' What?" IG laughed. He said the Detroit legend would have been greeted with three harsh words: " 'Shut the f--- up!' It would have been a 'shut the f--- up' moment off the top. Dame [Dash] would have been like, 'Look at him. He's crunchy! He's wack!' Then I look at the singles he put out. They're all good, but they only work for him. I say take Eminem, and let him say 'Hard Knock Life.' Still hot. Now let's have Jay-Z say the 'We Made You' song. They would laugh him out the f---ing building. ... It would be over."

Irv finished by saying the best rapper alive has to be Jay-Z or Lil Wayne."

duh he would say that... trying to make it seem likes its not personal
forget We Made You lets see if Jay can spit a track like Way I Am ?? it can go both ways
Gotti should shutup & stick to producing he obviously hasnt seen Em's rap battles

But when you say Lil Wayne is up there...... I mean WTF have you benn smoking??? Fuck Irv
I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it

Trying to pretend it has nothing to do with personal hate too, yeah fucking right.

If Em was on Def Jam and they were friends he'd be singing a different tune all together.

IMO Jay or DMX isn't close to Em.

Especially back when Em was battling. What's this guy on about with all that cheesy gangsta bullshit, what an idiot.

When Em was pure Shady in like 97-99 he made all that talk seem petty and childish and put people to shame with completely off the wall hilarious material that made them look ridiculous.

Em would of beat Jay or DMX.

Also, he's on about Em's first singles... Wow.

Lets look at Em's best stuff. Jay has never made anything or never could to Em's:
Till I Collapse
Lose Yourself
The Way I Am
Soldier
Cleaning Out My Closet
Renegade (produced, hook'd and best verse'd by Em) - Outshined Jay without a doubt

The list goes on. Em is easily better and more creative.

I wouldn't put that much of a gap between Jay and Em, Jay is one of the best to ever do it. To be honest, lyrically Jay shits over alot, even Tupac. I think Em's the best, but i think some people lost track of what others have done.

Em> Big L = Biggie = Jay Z (my opinion)

Tell you one thing, Jay is the most natural person i've ever seen on the mic, not the most talented ever, but the most natural.
My Top 5 (in no order)-

Eminem
Big l
Biggie Smalls
Royce Da 5'9"
Jigga

I haven't lost sight of what anyone has done and I respect Jay-Z.

But I think he's majorly overrated.

He bites a shit load of Biggie lyrics and then claims they're homages AFTER he's been caught out on them.

And they're clearly not homages, sometimes it's like entire fucking verses and nothing changed.

Jay-Z is natural yes but I think Eminem is more natural. He rides beats way better than Jay does IMO.

Also, Jay has basically kept the same style forever and rapped about pretty much the same stuff forever. Em changes every album.

The Way I Am vs Lose Yourself
My Name is vs Till I Collapse
Soldier vs Lady

I mean, the versatility is amazing. He sounds like a new rapper on every other song.

And Jay doesn't write things that literally make my jaw drop. Sometimes he'll do stuff that I think "That's nice" or "Pretty good" but at no point have I ever heard anything from him and thought "WOW, NOBODY ELSE CAN DO THAT! THAT WAY" Which is what I think with a lot of Em's stuff.

Most actually. Em's so off the wall I mean... Nobody writes like him.

He doesn't bite Big, Big was his guy. If it was other people i'd think, yeah.. But the guys so talented why would the guy bite? He's just extremely proud of being from Brooklyn, and Big is Jesus there. I'm sure if Detroit had had a real legend come from there, then Em would consider doing the same thing, as he is proud of Detroit. But the fact that most of the people he even grew up listening to wasn't from his area says alot about the scene there until Em and Royce came about, i mean they only had Esham really.

I think Em's better lyrically and he does make me go "wow" more often. But Jay just captivates me on the mic. It's like he doesn't even have to think about shit. I know that Em's very natural, but even he's talked before about how mad Jay is with the whole, verse in one take off the dome thing. And it looks like he's doing that when he's live.

As far as versitility, that's another reason why i prefer Em. But Jay, while keeping the same voice and similar topics, still comes up with verses that don't repeat with the same amount of creativity, just makes you respect him more.

What do you think of Biggie and Big L then next to Em?

Also people that say Em outclassed Jay on Renegade are a bit ignorant, that shit was wayyyyyyyyyy closer that people give it, it's a mad verse from Jay, he just happened to be against perhaps best ever verse.
