Relapse losing its effect on me :(

Postby whtcrack » Jun 11th, '09, 03:56

When Relapse first came out after a few listens I rated it around 4 or 4.5, and placed it right up there with his three great albums. However, now that its been out and I have been listening to it, I also broke out his first 3 Cds. Listening to Relapse after listening to, SSLP, MMLP, and TES makes me realize that Relapse is not as great as I once thought it was. I would have to go with 3 or 3.5 now, just becuase of the lyrical greatness of it, but beyond that it really is not spectacular. I think the problem is that he is not that personal on Relpase. Beyond Deja Vu and Beautiful its just random lines and nothing really personal to him. Even on SSLP when he had the craziness, he still had a lot of personal songs (If I had, Rock Bottom, the hook in Brain Damage, etc.)

Thoughts..

It hasn't lost its effect on me. SSLP MMLP and TES took about 3-4 months before I stopped playing it everyday. Encore took about 2 weeks. Relapse is still getting daily listens. But sometimes, when albums lose their effect on me as you say, I stop listening to them for a couple of weeks and then after the break, it's back on full effect.

I actually listened to SSLP and MMLP back to back after Relapse on a long train ride and I didn't think Relapse lost. I think I actually enjoyed it more.

Think about it this way...

Why don't people complain about why any artist besides Eminem does not include "personal" tracks on their albums?

I personally think Relapse was more for entertainment and shock value, not for "relating to," much like the Slim Shady LP. Sure, you can relate to songs like "Rock Bottom" and "Beautiful," but can you really relate to raping a woman's vagina with an umbrella? Can you relate to having yourself being raped by your stepfather? (unless you seriously have a fucked-up family). You can't force or expect an artist to have mature stuff. But you never know.
Yo, from the first to the last of it; delivery is passionate/
The whole and not the half of it; vocab and not the math of it/
Projectile that them blasted with; accurate assassin shit/
Me and Kweli close like... Bethlehem and Nazareth/

Seems like your own opinions, not one you can form
Cant make a decision you keep questioning yourself

Take a break from listening to it, then go back to listening to it. I'm currently not listening to it, but i've been bumpin Slim Shady LP in the meantime. It's not at the same level as his other records, but it's still a very good album i'd probably rate it a 4

While making personal songs is good, its most definitely not a prerequisite for a good album. You can have an album full of gangsterisms, talk of guns and hoes and money and it could still be ill depending on how its all put together.

I said this about Relapse quite a while back and I'll say it again: Its average. Really there is some terrible stuff on there. While 'Insane' sounds really cool and funny, lyrically its no better than anything from Encore. Bagpipes, Same Song & Dance, 3AM and Medicine Ball have no purpose other than just rambling on about random shit. Then there's the accent. redundant beats. Beautiful pales in comparison to Sing for the Moment or Lose Yourself while Underground pales in comparison to Till I Collapse or Criminal. The only song thats really classic is De Ja Vu but besides from that, Relapse is nothing more than average in my opinion and it didn't take too long before the excitement of a new Em album wore off.

TES>MMLP and SSLP > Relapse > Encore

^^^^ COSIGN EVERY SINGLE LINE.

Seriously, the people who say relapse is on the same level as his 3 classics must not really dissect the lyrics. I am a fan because there was always more beneath the surface in all of his 3 classics. I could hear them for the 200th time and catch something new. Relapse does not have that effect at all.

De Ja Vu is really the only good song on this album. I don't think Relapse is bad but the people who put this album on a pedastool and consider it one of his best works- I somehow doubt that you are a Hip Hop fan. For a Hip Hop head to think Relapse is on the same level as SSLP, MMLP, or TES.. it really exposes your ability to analyze lyrics imo.
