Recurring Motifs/Lyrics in Eminem tracks

Postby Dommo » Jun 12th, '09, 04:39

There are some obvious recurring things in different Eminem songs, and there are some more subtle ones. I'll start off with a few that are pretty blatant, and I'm sure more educated Eminem followers can come up with some of subtler ones.

- Public Service Announcements (1st tracks on SSLP/MMLP)
- "I'm just playing .... you know I love you" (2nd tracks on MMLP/TES - Kill You, White America)
- "A lot of people ask me..." (Final tracks SSLP/MMLP/Relapse - Still Don't Give a Fuck, Criminal, Underground)
- "And Dr. Dre said.." and "I drank a fifth of Vodka, you dare me to drive?" from My Name Is are both repeated in The Real Slim Shady and Stan respectively.

I know I'm just be scratching the surface here. Anyone got anymore? I think this could be fun, analyzing different Eminem tracks.

"Yo Slim you gunna let him get away with that? He tried to play you, you can't let him skate with that!"

First used in When the Music Stops, then played slowed down at the beginning and end of Nail in the Coffin

Hmm... I haven't actually heard the intro to Curtain Call, but Encore and The Eminem Show certainly have very similar intros (Walking onto the stage infront of an audience). The ending is also similar in that they both end with walking back onto the stage.

Also of interest are, IMO, the ties between the end of Encore, When I'm Gone, and My Darling. At the end of Encore, Eminem shoots himself in the head, which sort of reflects 'death of Slim Shady' which he also does in When I'm Gone. Along with this, in the video clip of When I'm Gone, at the part in the song where Eminem shoots the gun, (because of censor issues) Eminem smashes a mirror. This kind of goes hand in hand with the "Fuck this mirror!" in My Darling. Something to think about.

In does. It's just that most of the links has the song where that part is edited out.

True but its:

You're slim, you're gonna let him get away with that?
He tried to play you, you can't let him 'scape with that

thats what the booklet says right?

anyways, it also says that he says "sun myself in the ground before I put some wack shit out" instead of "run myself in the ground before I put some wack shit out"

so no. your wrong!

Point taken, dough im sure it is atleast 'scape instead of skate. There are some errors in the booklet then.

I also got another easy one:

"Guess who's back"

Im back, without me..... And a few more

Another little thing I noticed, probably (most definitely) a coincidence. Does anyone see similarities between the intro to Brain Damage and Deja Vu? It's like Deja Vu is a more recent, cinematic, higher production value, serious version of Brain Damage's intro. I thought that was quite neat.

@Dommo, heres another thing I've noticed. Does this make any sense, the connection of Deja Vu and Drug Ballad. Same topic, different view on it though, as in DB=Drugs are good, DV=Drugs are bad.

Deja Vu Chorus:
Sometimes I feel so alone, I just don't know,
Feels like I been down this road before,
So lonely and cold, it's like something takes over me,
Soon as I go home and close the door,
Kinda feels like déjà vu, I wanna get away from this place I do,
but I can't and I wont say I tried but I know that's a lie cause I don't,
and why I just don't know.....

Drug Ballad Chorus:
Cause every time I go to try to leave (Whoa)
Somethin' keeps pullin on my sleeve (Whoa)
I dont wanna but I gotta stay (Whoa)
These drugs really gotta hold on me (Whoa)
Cause everytime I try ta tell 'em no (Whoa)
They won't let me ever let 'em go (Whoa)
I'm a sucker all I gotta say (Whoa)
Is drug's really gotta hold on me?
