Unlocking GSM cell phones

i think the computing section is computer and internet related so i did not know where else to post this.

does anyone know anything about unlocking cell phones, i know cellphones are locked but what about the sim cards? both need unlocking? i'm new to this!

i currently own a sony ericsson w350

the phone is what requires the unlocking, the SIM card cannot be unlocked.

Unlocking is when you take, for example an iphone, which is AT&T exclusive and use it on another carrier ie T-Mobile.

yes, (not to be a dick) but do a google search for the phone model and how to unlock it, i'm sure there's a pretty simple way with directions.
