Eminem's Current Popularity

Postby Ice_Scarred » Jul 26th, '09, 18:08

Well, in all honesty....did Em's comeback really put him back on top? Like did you feel the hype from day one when he dropped Relapse? I mean when I went to FYE to cop the record, a bunch of people were buying Em albums / merchandise...but like as overall hype did you feel the album lived to expectations? Like I remember people saying Eminem's gonna be on top, everyone's gonna know he's the best rapper alive, everyone's gonna start talking about him / listening to him again, he's gonna stir up hella controversy, he's gonna blow up again and be everywhere etc.

I mean in all honesty, it almost doesn't feel as if Em dropped to me sometimes. He did a bunch of promotional shit earlier to promote the album and right now he's probably just laying low to work on R2. But even with his videos being in rotation, We Made You was around MTV / VH1 / BET for a while but than neither 3am nor Beautiful are getting any hype. Not on MTV / VH1 or BET. At my school people barely even talk about Em anymore. If they do they talk exclusively about his oldstuff.

Do you think that the album gave him that Popularity he once had, or do you think his popularity isn't as huge as expected (like I do)? Do you think R2 will be the record that will put him over the top? Like with crazy hype, popularity and shit?

IDK if my post is making any sense, but this has been on my mind lately. Idk...

I perfectly know what you mean and yes, I think Eminem doesn't have that popularity that he used to have. I think the lack of a strong single made him not gain as much popularity. Relapse was better than I expected but then again it wasn't that strong either, as an album. I'm sorry to say but to me Relapse was out, I bought it, I enjoyed it for 3 weeks or so and to be honest it's been left around a bit. I'm hoping with the release of a much stronger single and everything he will gain more hype and popularity. Obviously I want him to make another great album.

At least with me and the people i know/hang around with, Relapse just kind of solidified his mark as the best rapper alive. Everyone was kind of like "yeah he's great n all but the 'best rapper alive' rappers dont put out albums like encore, etc.. he's now retired" and things like that. After Relapse and they heard his wordplay and lyrics everyone was like "Yeah ok, he def is the best rapper alive now, id like to see lil wayne or jay z come up with those types of lyrics." Thats how it is to me too. Its like i kinda knew before relapse and now i def know.

Also, in SSLP days and stuff he was a pop icon as much as he didnt like it. He was a white rapper with bleached blond hair, something you didnt see or expect, that stirred up controversy with anyone over anything. He's calmed down now and now you know of him and expect certain things from him. In my opinion, it was a great comeback. It wasnt so much a popularity/hype comeback as it was a comeback to just putting out a great album that we have been waiting for for years. Sorry if i went on too long or dont make sense, im a little high lol

SAME WITH ME!!! Yes, We Made You wasn't strong at all, it just had slight buzz because it was his "comeback" single. I hope R2 will give him that old popularity, to get people to start talking about him again. To get that buzz he used to have.

EDIT: Bernie, I kinda get you. I just wished the album was strong enough to garner that buzz. Maybe Em wanted to save the buzz for R2....50 said this album was good, but R2 was "exciting" which gives me higher hopes.

The album lived up to my expectations... however, I don't think he's as popular as he used to be.

To me he'll always be number one! :y:

The country is too divided.
people are distracted with other things.
what i'm trying to say is,
its harder for one artist to catch a huge wave of popularity now
and have the crazy effect on the country/media as MMLP had.

TRL was crucial for artists/bands.
I don't see people passionate about an artist/bands now like they used to be
I remember thousands of people with signs waiting outside of TRL to see artists like Eminem/Backstreet boys/Blink 182/N sync/Britney/Korn/ etc...

Also, Radio is also completely ruined now. even if Em had a smash hit, they wouldn't play it.
people want black eyed peas, lady gaga, and drake. people are brainwashed.

twitter, youtube, myspace, have given people access to UNLIMITED new artists/bands.

we're in a different age.
no one cares really anymore.
and him hiding away from the public doesnt help either.
He doesnt communicate with the outside world like other rappers do via twitter/youtube
he's very secretive

nonetheless,
He's still popular as fuck. He's more popular than the average artist.
He had the best first week sales so far this year. His album is multiplatinum worldwide.
Everyone I know, knows who Em is.
but a lot of people that used to care for his music stopped caring.

I think if he would have used Crack A Bottle (as much as I hate it) as his first "official" single, released at the same time We Made You got released (but not even put WMY on the album, nor release it) he might have done better. It got to #1 and got a good bit of play, while WMY kind of fizzled out pretty fast. It's obvious though that he isn't as big as he once was. It's almost impossible to stay one of the biggest artists period. He's still one of the biggest in rap, but before he was one of the biggest across all genres for the time I think.

he'll never be what he was..he was the most popular music artist for 5-6 years..things he did were amazing, 2 albums went 5x plat, 2 diamond albums, movie..he was bringing hype for 50, g unit ,D12, even obie went multi platinum..music from those years is timeless..relapse is still good but nothing near that..it is what it is

i think Em's current popularity and state in music is more poweful than any other on the planet, i mean 1 million albums of Relapse sold in a week is better than any other artist about in 2009, so yes, his popularity is still there, i just believe the whole situation around the releaseing of singles should have been diffferent insted of all at once around the album,

We all have to remember that music has changed since he was last in the business, No more TRL for the americans, No more Top of The Pops for the UK.

This is because of a couple things. First off, hes only had a couple songs that get a lot of play on the radio this year, and most people nowadays are completely single oriented and dont care about albums. I think the biggest reason tho, is because he is never featured on any big hits. Like if you look at Lil Wayne or T-Pain, they are on almost every single song getting play on the radio. Right now, Lil Wayne's singles have flopped from Rebirth but hes on so many hits that hes still in the back of peoples minds because of that. Think about it, where would Lil Wayne be if he just had Prom Queen and wasn't featured on all the singles that hes on. I think that's a pretty good way to look at it. But I want it to stay that way. And also, he just came back from a 5 year break. He's kinda like a brand new artist in many ways. I think after Relapse 2 he will gain some more popularity, but he will never be what he used to be. He used to stick out as a white rapper and shock people, but people don't care about that anymore

he is no where near how popular he was years ago

but 600,000 in one week is a lot for having barely any buzz, so it shows that he's hung onto a lot of fans who actually by the album

Maybe hes not as big as he used to be when he dropped The Real Slim shady.. But hell man Hes still the most popular rapper on earth...Hes everywhere and everyone knows him ,
But yea when he dropped Relapse it wasnt THAT big it was a Regular comeback But good enough you know what I mean ?
And what really brought Relapse down ?
Its simple , He didnt have a Promo Song like The Real Slim Shady .. That song rocked the whole world and people still play it man.

I swear HOPSIN is better than most rappers out there.

yea i know....he should have pissed off alot more people but I dont know if its because hes not as popular or cause he layed low. But the feminists groups should be piseed at the rape things. GLAAD should be pissed at the "homophobic" remarks but its like nobody cares anymore. Its a weird thing.
