Snoop Dogg

Postby DrRapid » Jul 30th, '09, 18:46

As we all know Snoop Dogg debuted in the rap game with Doggystyle. It was an incredible album with some great Dr. Dre production. After Dre left Death Row and Snoop Doggy Dogg himself left after a disappointing The Doggfather it seems like Snoop sort of fell off. He hasn't really come back with a strong album. Sometimes it is hard for an artist to make an album on the same level as their debut when you get a lot of pressure (e.g. Nas's Illmatic) but it's not like Snoop has made an album even close to the level of Doggystyle. A lot of people seem to consider him one of the best and yes, he is a popular but I don't think he's released any other masterpieces apart from his debut.

So what is it? The lack of Dr. Dre production that has made him "weaker" in the rap game? Any thoughts on Snoop Dogg being overrated? What y'all think?

I think the reason Doggystyle was so great was because he had some veteran guidance that understood the west coast sound. I mean after Snoop left Death Row he was with No Limit and some other people and none of them understood what West Coast was supposed to mean so he wasn't getting pushed in that direction. Also since he only had Dre for one album and he was very young when he started this rap shit he missed out on a lot of guidance that could have kept him in that same Doggystyle style and mindset as opposed to being used as a cash cow for every label he was with.

But don't you think he would of tried harder at least to get back to that Doggystyle style :sweating: and try to get some more Dre production to back him up. I remember reading not too long ago on a Spanish hip hop magazine that he performed more as Snoop Doggy Dogg if you get what I mean by that.

I think he's released too many average albums to be named as one of the best. He's a lot of times on the lists, maybe not top 10 but top 20 yes.

I'm not so sure he doesn't try, or at least he didn't try. But you also have to understand that artists can only put out what labels let them put out. If labels want an album full of singles and not that slightly dark west coast shit with a party anthem or two then that's what he has to give him. Dre gave him more freedom with his creativity and guided his mind to think on that level. Also Dre production would have helped, but again, labels want certain shit on albums.

I liked Ego Trippin a lot, different sound...pretty unique. Probably my favorite Snoop album after Doggystyle.

I just think he releases an album after the other with little impact. I only own one album of his which is Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Boss. It's above average but it's not even that good. I bought it years ago when I didn't know anything about Snoop but now I'm thinking to buy Doggystyle which I think should be the only Snoop album to own.
