You can recommend artists but people will only grow to love an artist or genre on their own.
I've learnt not to bother trying to get people to listen to what I listen to, I do my bit my raving about what I'm currently listening to and wait for the day when they come back to me telling me how good an artist is .. when I tried forcing it on 'em months about.

^you have a point there, I recommended my friends some artists but they still didn't like them..
But after a week one came to me and said that he liked a song from Sway, which he found out on his own..

People need to find music which they like and which they can relate too, and sometimes a recommendation can't be harmfull, it can even make them like a artist.

he dropped an album in 99, but yeah i guess u can tell i'm not too into that scene.
lol i read that slick rick said he was waiting for a more mature hip hop audience b4 dropping his next album (it was supposed to be in 2007)
