The Game estimates that he has over 100 tattoos -- at least a cool Benjamin of ink.
But while the Compton rapper originally known as Jayceon Taylor is usually spitting rhymes, when it comes to body art, there isn't always necessarily a reason.
"Some of them mean a lot, and some of them I might have just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and just did something," Game said recently.
For example, the L.A. logo under his right eye that covers an old tattoo of a butterfly was hardly the product of a long-thought-out plan.
"I woke up one morning and I was on my shit like I usually be, and I felt like I was the face of L.A.," he said. "So I went to the tattoo shop and put L.A. on my face."
The tattoo that the LA symbol covered had and still has plenty of personal meaning for Game, a family man through and through.
"That was real reminiscent of my grandmother's life and how beautiful she was and the things she taught me before she passed after I graduated from high school," he explained. "I covered up the butterfly with the L.A. because that's how I was feeling one day. If I wake up tomorrow and feel like putting a football over the L.A., that's what I'll do, man. It's my life."
Game said his grandmother actually took great interest in his tattoos and had a unique, somewhat progressive theory on skin ink.
"When I first got my first tattoo, she used to tell me that it's my skin and it's only a costume," Game said. "God gives you a costume for somewhere about 70, 80 years, 100 if you're lucky, you're just borrowing this costume from God, and at the end of the day, you turn it back into God after you die.
"So she's like, 'Write whatever you want on your costume.' So I took her advice and I have like 100 tattoos now and some of them are in memory of people who've played real inspirational parts in my life."
Those include a tattoo honoring the late rapper Eazy-E on his right arm, an NWA piece on his chest, The Game logo on his neck, a Hurricane tattoo for his shoe line, a Chuck Taylor tat, a teardrop under his left eye, a relatively self-explanatory "G U-Not" tattoo, a "Beef" tat "because I've had a lot of beefs, man, and I guess I'm the spokesperson for beef, who knows?"
So where does all this ink come from?
The answer lies in a tattoo parlor outside of L.A. run by KG of 264 Customs, Game's personal skin artist.
KG, who considers The Game his first "real big star" client, said he has done so many tattoos for the rapper that he's lost track of the number.
"I did two original pieces, but I've touched up just about everything," KG said. "There was a while there where I was going there every other day. It was kind of like I had salary pay. I touched up just about everything. I brought it back to life."
KG is particularly proud of the "Hate it or Love it" tattoo that sprawls across the top of Game's chest. He said it was done the night before the video shoot for "It's Okay (One Blood)," the first single off Game's latest album, Doctor's Advocate and that it wasn't exactly a walk in the park.
"It took about 3 hours," KG said. "We needed some breaks because it was in a sensitive spot. Game's a tough dude, but I knew he had to take a break."
But when it comes to covering Game's body with tattoos, KG doesn't get much of a break.
"I think that's what he likes about it is that I can come to him," KG said. "I've been to all the studios where he's recorded. I've been to his house. I've even been to Compton. It's always exciting. That's why I like it. I'm just like, 'Let me know,' I close up shop wherever I'm at, and then I head over there at 10 and we're there until about 4 or 5 in the morning sometimes."
KG said working so closely with The Game has given him a look into the real person that maybe a lot of hip-hop fans don't see.
"He's a real down-to-earth person," KG said. "I was surprised. I mean, I love his music, and when I got over there and found out he's a real person. He's still grounded as an individual."
Meanwhile, the tattoos will just keep on coming. One hundred now and only Game knows how many in the future. And maybe even he doesn't know.
"I forget where these things are, man," Game said with a laugh.
"I'm just writing on myself, but hey, it's my life, man, and I'm gonna do as I feel."
