IMO, someone who can appreciate skill and content without worrying about what's currently popular, the appearance of the MC, or how much money he has.

At first.. Let's state what hip hop really is. It's a culture, a movement, a way of life for some people. It's the music, the history, the people who made it, the versatility of styles, graffiti, DJing, break dance.. It's a fusion of different genres of music, jazz, blues, funk. It's expressing yourself. It's appreciating people who made it from the streets to the top. It's the vibe you get when you listen to a song and feel it. It's a state of mind.

Me? I might consider myself a hip hop fan, but I know there are people out there who can say way more about it than me. I know shit about DJing, I've never been into break dance, although I love the way they move. I done a bit of graffiti myself, but I'm nothing compared to some peeps out there.

But I love how they mix styles. I love the feeling you get when you buy a new CD and can't wait to put it on and let yourself forget about everything else. It's just me and the music, the lyrics, the rapper who is a genius to me, who can give me chills with one verse.

I love the moment when you stand in the crowd and wait for your favourite rapper and you feel the same anticipation and you shout him out along with hundreds of other people who came there for the same reason, for the same rush, who in this very moment are just like you. There's no fighting, no beefing, just you and the music. And then he comes up and you forget about the whole world, because each one of you thinks he's there for you only.

Wayne? Who the fuck is he anyways and why was he brought up in this discussion? He's done nothing for the culture except for making millions people believe that hip hop is blunt. That it's all about shaking your ass and being ugly. I've never listened to any Wayne's song and I will never give him credit. Simply because he's giving a false image to something that has changed my life. And I will still consider myself a hip hop fan, even though I say Wayne's shit without checking him out. I can appreciate someone who changed the game, who took it beyond, who changed life of millions out there, who inspired people to move forward. This is what hip hop is to me and this is what I consider being a hip hop fan.

Yoshi always kills it.

Opinion of what type of hip-hop and artists you like don't matter. Rap is getting bigger, you have all differnent types anyway, from soulful Rakim, to political Immortal Technique, to storyteling Slick Rick, to street heavy Mobb Deep etc... it don't matter whether yoy don't like parts of rap , the genre is universal for those with an open mind and stop judging it by the mainstream. It's deeper than dressing up in baggy clothes with bandans on making gang signs. People forget Hip-Hop is a way of life and only Rock can claim to be bigger and more influential

A real hip-hop fan is basically someone who listens to a broad range of hip-hop, and is open minded to all the different types of hip-hop there is. From Run-DMC to present day.

And oh yeah someone who can rap along to this and knows the lyrics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diiL9bqvalo

I find it hilarious that I expected the link to be to Rapper's Delight haha, love that track.

yeah, word to yoshi, its the entire culture, not just the music. I love it all. HipHop for life.

Yoshi nails it as usuall.

Coleon wrote:Anyone open to all hip-hop, so basically if someone says Wayne has never had a good song isn't one

Why not? Maybe I don't like his music at all, it's my opinion. If someone says he doesn't like cake, does that mean he aint a fan of food?

Hip Hop is a movement, a life style, the way you as an individual act and the way you express yourself. It's not just music, it's a part of life. If Hip Hop music is one of the only things that keeps you going, even if life's shitty, well, then you can call yourself a Hip Hoper, even if you don't listen to a fair amount of rap music. It has nothing to do with baggy clothes, or screaming fuck the police, when you as an individual are being yourself and wearing shit YOU want to wear, then you're living Hip Hop. And a real fan of Hip Hop would be someone that respects that, and gives the person who lives like that credit and the probz he deserves. Which means that 90% of the mainstream rappers immediately fall out...
