I'd say Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection. Without that we wouldnt know about the evolution. And if we are not familiar with where we come from, we cant go forward. In science, off course. But thats just my opinion.

That is a very valid point.

I cannot come up with one particular all time important contribution however on a similar note I would also say interpreting DNA and stem cell research, microsurgery -particularly on bloodvessels and organ transplants which is evolving into all different kinds of tissue transplatation and regeneration to become possible

Imagine what the medical field is going to be like in 50 years...

Gravitation was first noted by Aristotle, then furthered by Galileo Galilei, then Newton, then finalized by Albert Einstein. So Einstein didn't necessarily "discover" gravitation.
