What Hip Hop means to fans

Postby Xray » Nov 20th, '09, 09:10

On a serious note what does Hip Hop really mean to you?

For me it's metaphorically life or death. Without Rap I don't think I'd survive much. Life's been a huge struggle for me ever since I can remember, so to me Hip Hop is life, its the ONLY and I mean ONLY time when I can sit down and listen, whether to a melody, or a lyric, and just connect.

Struggles of life is what makes Hip Hop what it is, to some a song might seem dope to them, but I look at it on a whole 'nother level, the true meaning behind it. Reason why I don't like anything that gets played on the radio now a days, simply because it doesn't help one to live, besides the owner.

The true routes of Hip Hop and its meaning has changed in the industry, and it makes it very hard for artists now a days to be heard or given a chance. IMO 90% of Underground rappers would of gotten fairly good record deals easily if the game was back in the 90's or even 80's.

Hip hop to me is life. I live, eat, breathe, and sleep rap music. I write everyday, I only listen to rap, it's just how I am. No one told me to be this way, hip-hop made me this way. Hip-hop is life plain and simple :y:

Hip hop is not necessarily a lifestyle for me, considering the fact I never sold drugs on the streets running from the cops everyday, but it's definitely more than plainly "music".

It's a thriving culture I am genuinely interested in, which mostly encompasses the music genre of "rap". :y:

Hip hop helps me get through things. I mean I can find a song for every mood I’m in. If I’m having a hard time getting through something I can find a hip hop song that makes me feel like I can do it or simply just gives me the motivation I need. Doesn’t always have to be the same struggle as what the song is about, but still it gives me the motivation I need. If you don’t know what I’m talking about that will just sound stupid to you, but I don’t really know how else to put it. So it means a lot to me. If you’re angry, happy or sad there is almost always a hip hop song that can put words to what you’re feeling. I haven’t been able to find that in any other music genre. ;)

Since the age of 11, Hip Hop has been the only music genre I could really conect with. Before that, I used to listen to the likes of Bob Marley, Brian Adams, etc. Even classic music once in a while, but Hip Hop is what makes me me. Without it, I would lose a part of myself, Hip Hop has made me into the man I am now. It's basically a necessity for me, I won't say I can't survive without it, 'cause of course I can, however, it's the thing that kept me going through rough times in the past, and it still does. The joy I feel when I hear some genius wordplay, crazy rhyme schemes or deep content is something that I cannot miss. The feeling I get when I have new music to play is like that of an addict getting his fix. I have studied the game, I eat, sleep and breath Hip Hop to a certain extent. No, I do not wear XL shirts and XL pants, but that doesn't mean that I don't live Hip Hop. I am Hip Hop, so as fan, it means alot to me, 'cause basically I am a fan of myself.

So, why did you whine about your ex when you broke up, surely you surived it, yet you sounded like she was your whole life? Don't barge in here and say things like that, we get it Scotty, to you it's just another music genre, but don't belittle us, we grew up depending on music like this to get through the day.

Same here, almost. Rock and rap are equal to me. Only two genres I listen to.

I'm not one to say that I'm living or have lived Hip Hop because that is just not true. Even though all the songs I listen to have little connection with me, I still in one way or another connect with them. It helps me get plugged in and enjoy the music and forget about everything else. It does not mean anything in life for me but it does participate in it no matter how little. I love the genre. I love the hear a rapper rhyme over great beats. I love it how it connects with poetry, a beautiful art. Hip Hop means a lot to me but it does not form part of life.

Hip Hop is life for me. It's what i'm planning for my future and helps me survive now. Without it, i'm just surviving and don't give me the shit about i can live without it..there'd be no real meaning to live without hip-hop for people, it's not about the image, it's the whole fucking culture

i didn't whine about her, i expressed my emotions. this is entirely different anyway, how does that relate to this? did i say that i wouldn't be able to live without her? no. bringing my ex into this thread was a low blow. especially as it's an entirely different thing. i'd expect it from a lot of people on here, but not you.

all i'm trying to say is, don't say you can't live without hip hop, when you blatantly can. that is contradiction. and it's a very ignorant thing to say, when there are people in the world who barely survive off the little food and water they get.

I knew you were gonna take offense, that was not the meaning. And, yes, I had to bring that in here, because of the way you're mixing two completely different things. Mental and physical, yes, you can survive as long as you have water and food, however, life can feel empty without certain things. That's why I used your ex as an example, I'm sure you felt heartbroken when you broke up, well, that emptyness is almost the same to some people when it comes to living without Hip Hop.

And, if you took offense, well, sorry.
