Thoughts on Lose Yourself

Postby Renee7931 » Nov 22nd, '09, 04:05

In the brief time I've been on this site and browsed through the forums, I noticed there's a lot of love for Lose Yourself. It makes me wonder: do people love this song because it's an Oscar winner and was #1 on the charts for so long so therefore it must be Em's best song? Is it because it's inspiring? IMO, it's a good song, but if I had to pick the best song from the 8 mile soundtrack it would be 8 mile road. What is it about this song that makes you feel that it is his best? I apologize in advance if this topic has been addressed before.

I like 8 Mile Rd better as well.
Lose Yourself is important because of its crossover appeal. It has a guitar driven rock beat with inspirational lyrics that appeal to everyone, whether you're a rock fan or a rap fan. Another big reason is the chorus. It's one of those bring-down-the-stadium sing along choruses.

When I first heard lose yourself, the intro with the piano kinda had me thrown "like wtf is em doing" cause it was so different. Then the way he intertwined the movie and his real life I thought was perfect, flawless to be honest, in addition to the insane rhyming (I think it's one of his best lyrical tracks ever) and the hook, not to the mention the uplifting "you can do anything" inspirational feel you get, the song just had everything a great song should. Also, the video for the song was perfect, def added a great visual :y: :y:

I can understand that it has crossover appeal. Alot of people who wouldn't normally listen to Em's music tend to like this song. I just don't get how some people think it's his best song ever. I've been reading a lot of comments about how there's hope for a Lose Yourself type single to lead off Relapse 2. Is it because everyone wants him to have that megastar chart status that he had before and think that's the way it should be done?

I think what people mean by that is they want a single that has it all, that can't be denied even by the detractors.

I would say no to chart success, I think in general most em fans just want a powerful track like Lose Yourself, The Way I Am, Just Don't Give a Fuck, shit like that, even like Beautiful, all singles em released, but as a first single because his powerful songs all have meaning when the lead singles are always the same formula but putting in new celebrity names

To be honest, I don't have a favorite. I love so many songs for tons of different reasons. The flow, the humor, the lyrics, etc. I also like Lose Yourself. It just seems to me that fans automatically say it's his best song without question. Not their favorite, but his best song period.

I think Stan has that problem far worse than Lose Yourself. I would say Stan comes nowhere near Lose Yourself.
Unbiased, I would say his best song is Like Toy Soldiers, although it's not one of my favorites.
An artist's "best song", while different from your "favorite song", is still an opinion. It's just a relatively unbiased one.

Lose Yourself is a lyrical masterpiece technically speaking...not just in the poetic sense. Like, it doesn't really follow a set pattern, it's just rhymes upon rhymes upon rhymes. You get a glimpse into it from the lyrics page in his book.

LTS
Rock bottom has that helium voice that I don't care for.

I know right?

I feel like I'm walking a tight rope, without a circus net
I'm popping percocets, I'm a nervous wreck
I deserve respect; but I work a sweat for this worthless check
Bout to burst this tech, at somebody to reverse this debt

LTS is way better than that!

Ever notice how the rhymes in LTS fall perfectly on the snare hits of the beat? Rock Bottom just isn't my thing, with that prepubescent voice of his. For such a serious, lyrical song, he should have used a voice that wasn't so thin.

He used a "pre-pubescent voice" on Rock Bottom? You think that the LTS voice is BETTER than that? And even IF the voice was better on LTS (for argument's sake)...the lyrics on that are still absolutely dwarfed by Rock Bottom's.

Yeah, there's no point in discussing this...you live on Jupiter, I live on Earth.
