I've been an Eminem fan since 2002, when I heard "Guilty Conscience" for the first time. I kinda stopped listening to him (and music in general) during the following years, but Relapse is what got me back into Eminem. At first, like many of you, I despised the album. When I heard "We Made You" I was like what is this crap. However, I decided to give the album another try, and the more I kept listening, the more I loved it.
I went back to his past stuff and started to discover a few gems that I totally forgot about, like Kim from the MMLP, Business from TES, When I'm Gone from Curtain Calls, and most of the stuff from the SSLP.
Having listened to most of his stuff, I still gotta say that Relapse is his best album, or at least the one that I find the most enjoyable to listen. In fact, I have 12 songs from Relapse on my iPod, compared to 7 from TMMLP, 5 from TES, 5 from the Slim Shady LP, 2 from Encore, 2 from the Re-Up, among others.
Like I said in the op, the beats are incredible, easily his best album from that standpoint. Again, the lyrics are also killer (literally). I can see why some dislike the extremely violent theme of the album, but if you take it for what it is, it's fantastic. Stuff like Same Song and Dance, My Darling and Beautiful are unlike anything I've heard from him before.
Seriously, the Relapse haters should give the album another go and another, and it will probably grow up on you like it did on me.
