Why are "Emo" Em songs so celebrated?

Postby Stanley C. » Dec 10th, '09, 15:05

The other topic got locked because of the song that was attached but lets take the topic and actually discuss it.

Why are songs like "MockingBird", "Beautiful", and "When I'm gone" so celebrated? They sound like a zombie is singing them and he sounds like his voice is shot in every one of those. He can hardly even stay on beat. Why is it that songs like this make little teenage girls wet their panties? They aren't even lyrically good. Rock Bottom, Slim Shady LP, Lose Yourself, songs like this are lyrical, yet they're highly underrated and the records get skipped. "I'm just so fucking depressed" is a shitty and non-lyrical opening line. "Have you ever loved someone so much you'd give an arm for" isn't even proper English. But ya know, who needs Multi-syllabic rhymes?

So, why the hell are they so popular?
"His Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy" - Eminem. GOAT. Name 1 rapper with better lyrics than that.

Not every song need to be packed with multisyllable-rhymes, wordplays etc etc...
Sometimes a simple song is great too.

Mockingbird is not lyrically good? Are you fucking serious? It is a life story turned into a song.

You are insane.

It makes me "wet my panties" because he has the ability to tell a story that is emotionally driven, include wordplay & rhymes, and rap about something most people can relate to simultaneously. Hes actually saying something, not just rhyming

Word to that. :b: For example, Eminem is one of my favorite rappers mostly because he flows and uses multies like crazy. And yet, Beautiful is my fav song of Relapse. Why? Because of all the emotion that seem to be completely sufficient in order to become my favorite one. Lotta multies woulda just ruined the song (thats why I always prefer Beautiful over Deja Vu). The same thing is with When Im Gone and Mockingbird.

And whats up with ya stupid ass sayin he doesnt stay on-beat on those songs? It just proves your ignorance. Just cuz he flows slower, doesnt mean he doesnt stay on-beat.

No offence, but people like you shouldnt even listen to hip hop.

actually he was right, Mockingbird is lyrically horrible. The song story belongs to subject-matter, not lyricsism. But I like the song anyway, basically I like all the songs he wrote for his kids :y:

Back on topic, I thought it is obvious why people like those kind of songs.
1. Those songs are real and people can relate to them.
2. It has substance & emotion -> make you think -> more replay value.
Songs like that are his best shots at the outside fanbase (non-hiphop fans) because people don't need to like or understand rap to like those songs.

Yes, and songs rapped in a Middle-Eastern accent (like a 13 year old would do) that constantly mentions raping girls and PRETENDING to be a serial killer isn't?

ANY rapper if they wanted to could about serial killer shit (check out writing sections of the boards), but not ever rapper can rap coherently and well about their life story that draws people into it .

I don't get what's so embarrassing about Mockingbird or When I'm Gone, as far as subject matter goes they're deep. If anything songs like We Made You & Crack a bottle are embarrassing.
