He knew he couldn't top The Eminem Show at the time though, so what do you expect? He must like it even a little, enough to put it out.

He said that in an interview just a few months ago.

He put out the album because he had planned it since TES. But what happened was that as he started to work on it, his addiction was getting worse and worse and as a result he couldn't write anymore. The drugs were also fucking up his voice and his thoughts were unorganized.

I think that by the time realized something was seriously wrong, he was already committed.
