Your friend sounds like a musically unintellectual hater to me. Eminem is mainstream, yes..that's not a fact I would dispute, how does one think he got there though? The skills and ability that make Eminem the globally known MC that he is, puts him in the mainstream. Eminem's talent is undeniable. His lyricism is unprecedented and today I personally feel like there is not an MC on a label or in the underground that comes close to bringing what Eminem brings in the bars he spits on. With his flow, word play, story telling ability..the multiple rhyming schemes he has and the way he puts it all together so creatively makes him one of the greatest of all time. After more than a decade of doing his own thing, his numbers represent him more than any words I can say. Mainstream listeners can be thought of as "retards," in some ways; like how they will eat up everything that's fed to them and think and say it's the best shit since sliced bread afterwards, but the fact that Eminem is in the mainstream by no means takes away anything from his talent or makes his listeners and fans any less of the fans we are of good music, that's that. His music and his lyrics have substance to it. He's not making ringtone music like a T-Pain, or rapping some of the non-sense that newer artists try to do. Eminem has been doing his thing for more than a decade now, and no one has shit on the respect and success he has achieved in his time since he came up through the hood in the D. Oh yea, and ask him who he thinks is the best rapper these days? My guess is it starts with a Lil and ends with a Wayne. If so, tell your friend he's got mad jokes, I didn't say the were good jokes though.
lifetime bliss for eternal torture and pain.

Hehe, sorry, just had to pull that one out. =P
...You'd be surprised >_<

Look, anybody who knows our language can tell you that Eminem has truly mastered it. Regardless of what kind of light he wishes to present his mastery in.

And I listen to a lot of underground, from Andre Nickatina & Equipto, to Ace & Edo. And, to be honest, aside from Eminem, underground rap is the only place I can find real music when it comes to the genre.

But even with all of the incredibly talented underground artists, Eminem still tops them all lyrically.

Ask your 'buddy' for some examples. I'd love to hear them.

I have listened to GZA, Method Man (of course), Q, and Raekwon.

I can tell you that, even though most are very good and worthwhile to listen to - they're just not up to em's caliber.

But, still, something like

Many of those guys don't even qualify as "underground". Your friend doesn't even understand the terms he's using to talk about this shit.

Btw, he is somewhat intelligent. He's not like a complete idiot who is ignorant of anything but his opinion, although that's how it seems.

Word. :y:

and just for good measures...
"There's people that love me and people that hate me but it's the evil that made me this backstabbing, deceitful, and shady. I want the money, the women, the fortune and fame. That means I'll end up burning in hell, scorching in flames. That means I'm stealing your checkbook and forging your name..Lifetime bliss for eternal torture and pain,"

- -have your friend look at that little piece of Eminem lyrics and see if he can think of an MC that could even attempt to assemble anything of that caliber and I say right now that it will not happen. Mainstream is the place talent and success takes you. If trying and then establishing one's self as one of the best wasn't the point of the industry, the world would be full of a bunch of mediocre motherfuckers and then haters like your friend would bitch and moan about the need to hear something better.

I hate people like that who think because they listen to underground rap that they know more than the 'average' listener and think that all mainstream sucks. I've noticed it especially for tech n9ne and immortal technique fans. They say shit like they're the best rapper ever and no one compares and all mainstream artists (eminem, nas, etc.) all suck and don't compare. I hate close minded people like that.

He says that because Eminem "sold out" after his underground, he isn't as good.
