just got GIMPshop and this is my first photo editing experience, I added some font, through efx in the sky and put a red over lay on his shirt, not too much but I like it, please tell me what you think guys

the pic you made is tidy. i liked it. though you could've been more creative. but maybe you meant for this to be a simple piece, i don't know. for your first piece though, it's exceptional.

any ideas as to how I can make this guys' hand look on fire and not just dumb

I thought the dodge tool on fade then some red, orange, and yellow over lay would do it but it just came out dumb

Create your own little fire picture. What you have right now isn't bad, but as a new layer have that and try making its shape a little more realistic. Then put it over his had and put opacity of it to like 65% so you can still see the hand and the fire. Not really sure how it'll turn out but that's how I would do it I assume.

I actually tried this but ended up batching it up badly
