He was a way better rapper than BIG and Tupac were and yet he gets about one tenth of the acclaim they do.

Multies makes up only 30% of a good lyricist, but I agree: Big L is underrated. But if you think Nas and Jay-Z don't give a shit about "lining up syllables", you're sadly mistaken.

30% of a good lyricist? LOL, how do you figure that?

If you're not rhyming multis fairly consistently you're a shitty lyricist, period.

Brother Ali is the most underrated rapper of all time. His newest album, "Us", is an instant classic and he doesn't get much recognition.

I personally didn't like that album

I will say Slug :y:

Opinions are opinions, but I think that it's better than anything else has put out since Pacewon and Mr. Green's album last year. Slug is good, as well. Some more:

Murs
Mos Def
Finale- Rookie who probably had my second favorite album this year
Apathy
MF Doom
Prosper Jones
Panacea ( a group)
Black Milk
Elzhi
Evidence
Talib Kweli doesn't get too much hype

Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus

Obie Trice is an incredible rapper but is way overshadowed by Em's success. Just listen to Go to Sleep, Spend Some Time, and Drips. I bet all of u have but just to remind you how good he is.

Probably the most underrated in mainstream times that I can think of are (in no order)...

1. Xzibit
- A truly underrated lyricist in every aspect. He can be fierce, funny, ironic, hard-hitting, poetic, introspective. He's the whole package, like Em. He's one of the only Em collaborators to not get smashed on tracks. I think Em has had the better slightly but X can hold his own. He's made some utter classic songs. "Paparazzi" is close to a rap masterpiece and "What U See Is What U Get" is magic.

2. Obie Trice
- Obviously overshadowed by Em's fame but a true rapper in his own right. Two great first albums. I slightly prefer Cheers I'd say but they're both not far from classics.

3. Proof
- Majorly majorly talented MC. The true #2 in D12 next to Em. Swifty is then no.3 IMO. But it's weird Proof didn't do more when he could. He was obviously a very dedicated friend, making sure his crew and Em did their thing first. His debut Searching for Jerry Garcia IS a classic though. Every track is amazing for a new reason, he switches up styles and it's just fantastic and original.

4. Royce Da 5'9"
- I only heard of Royce, like many, from his Bad Meets Evil days. But those alone were enough to convince me this man is a lyricist to behold. Probably the only guy I've heard on a track with Em that I'd accept truly held his own, as an equal. Or close enough. And some argue he bettered Em sometimes. Either way, he's great. I didn't listen to his few solo cuts after that, I wasn't aware of them. But I got Street Hop and that's a great album. Just short of a classic to me but a great effort.

5. MC Guru (from Gang Starr)
- Haven't heard much of Gang Starr, I was always aware of them and heard a few tracks here and there. And was always impressed by Guru's smooth and technical style. I've just got their entire discography and am listening right through now. From what I've heard though, Guru is a stellar lyricist / rapper and I barely hear him mentioned. They make a phenomenal team.

I'll have to go with:
Big L
Proof (@Eminembase, he technically put out 2 albums and a mixtape, so if you've only heard Searching for Jerry Garcia you should chek out "I Miss the Hip-Hop Shop" and "Grown Man Shit")
Obie
Black Milk
Swifty McVay
AZ

@Evan C, multis isn't everything.....
