Haven't seen the movie but i have seen lot of images of the film. I don't know , i think you analyze too much the movie. But yeah, they have lot of things in common with natives.

I hate fictious movies first of all.. but I got dragged to watch this, and I'd have to say its pretty good even for my liking. I didnt like the beginning that much, but it got better quickly.. only bad part was that it was a bit too long. All in all, good movie ESPECIALLY for being a fantasy/fictious type movie

He definitely drew on the native americans for the plot. And I thought the movie was good but wayy too over hyped.
