I don't know what kind of behavior people expect from him. Various people on twitter said he chatted with random people, signed autographs, waved them etc. He didn't come there to attend a street party. He went there to work. The youtube videos show him and the crew shooting scenes for the video. It was hard enough to do the job with random passerby people shouting, trying to take a pic of him and mingling with the crew. Many people have a problem to talk in front of the camera, let alone act in front of screaming pedestrians. I know many people that don't see themselves as socially awkward and they wouldn't be able to perform like this in front of the cameras.
If he payed attention to the people that screamed his name or waved at him, they would be still there shooting the video now, tomorrow... He was being as professional as the circumstances on the busy street allowed him to be but it doesn't mean he acted like a robot during breaks.

I think socially awkward were those screaming people that couldn't control themselves just because he's famous. Not to mention they were taking pics in front of his face. Perhaps the awkward reactions of some people made him feel awkward.
