The internet also helps with hype tbh, an example is 50 Cent, he was pushed out around the time EVERYONE was starting to have internet access and forums were really buzzing, they were discussing everything and everyone.
In 1999 Hip Hop Heads would read Hip Hop magazines looking for the latest news on artists, people not too fussed on Hip Hop / Rap wouldn't bother meaning it was much more difficult to push a new artist.
Everyone is saying the internet generation is what is killing the industry, but in a backwards way it's also what's keeping it alive, even if people weren't able to download music online there would still be people making fake CD's and selling them, people will do anything to get something cheap, it's human nature, the internet just made it easy for everyone to do.
