To those who don't know Gervais, he's a comedian (from the UK) who was the co-writer, co-director and co-star of The Office (original) and Extras, which was on BBC and HBO.
I remember reading this comment on Eminem from him a while back. It's from 2004, so Em probably didn't even hear it as Gervais was hardly known at all in the US then. He's still only known in spots but is getting much bigger.
He said this...
Eminem's a comedy genius. How can he get that much humour and balls in a lyric. There's been nothing like him. His songs are genuinely brilliant, funny, erudite, articulate - he can be damning and still remain above it, and funny.
There's charcacter, there's tongue-and-cheek and he just spits it. And the videos are little works of art as well. If he wants to co-write my next award-winning sitcom with me, it would be an honour.
Whether or not the offer was genuine, which I think it actually was, I think that's a brilliant summation of why Eminem is so good. To the point in hand, if Em were to write something with Gervais that would be amazing. As Gervais essentially shares Em's artistic integrity, believes in zero compromise and purposely creates things on taboo subjects to ironically jab the attitudes of those who misunderstand them. Which is pretty much what Em has been doing since he began.
They could create something great together. It's a perfect match in terms of values and vision. It's great to see one genius appreciate another too, am glad the best comedian of my generation likes the best rapper of my generation.
