I Hate That...

Postby Culture » Sep 23rd, '10, 01:47

Okay bear with me.

I hate that people look for deeper meanings. Such as in my English class when we tear apart poems and face value metaphors and reach hard core for something I personally don't think is there. Some people do it to Eminem songs too, like that dude who had that weird theory on how Eminem dissed Lil Wayne the whole album by explaining stuff he touched on. Idk, that one was weird.

Back to the point. Anything can be scrutinised and twisted and I hate that. Some guy paints a picture of a tree and you've got the douches who go "well the tree symbolizes parents care for their child (the grass) and the shade is them keeping the child from the light which symbolizes truth of everything" or "the tree is actually a metaphor for society and the roots represent the lower class society, in the dirt yet responsible for the total structure not collapsing as a whole". Fuck that. It's a tree, not Animal Farm.

This was brought to you by my poetry homework and procrastination.

I completely agree :worship: We had to read Speak and I hated all the symbolism in that book.

Have you ever seen the South Park episode where they write the book  It describes this perfectly.

"The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs" lmfao, exactly

Taking things for face value is not the best thing to do in every situation but I just can't reach hardcore and not feel dumb.

What a thrill ----
My thumb instead of an onion.
The top quite gone
Except for a sort of a hinge
Of skin,
A flap like a hat,
Dead white.
Then that red plush.

-Sylvia Plath

Right around the time my teacher said something about the word "red" here being associated with sex I wanted to walk out of the room. Great imagery but I know this crazy bitch was taking this a step at a time like "oooo subliminal message here".

English teachers are some of the dumbest people I know  My mom's an english teacher and she's a fucking idiot. I hate those stupid poems like that though. How is it going to benefit us in anyway to know what those people were talking about? How will it make us any smarter? I don't get it. Thank god I don't have English until next semester

My english teacher was validictorian so wtf.

Exactly on the bolded part. Why don't we just cover what's required and then I write our own stuff so we atleast do something productive.

Because they want you to learn how other people use symbolism so you can use it in your own writing. Like any of my classmates are going to become famous poets :coffee:

What would you advise? I plan on being a psychologist but I still enjoy writing.

SiiNiDE wrote:I agree to an extent, but there are also songs that are completely metaphorical. For example, my favorite song of all time is "Your glasshouse" by atmosphere. It's a song about waking up with a hangover and not knowing where you are, etc.. But that's just a metaphore for Slug's views on the war in the middle east.

Wow I know that song, I'll have to give it a re listen.

I didn't say it was a universal approach but just sometimes you can tell when it's a reach. A Slug or Lupe song I could see being deep but if someone ever tries to twist another Em song that is clearly face value I'mma snap.
