50 Cent
Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit
Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish
But I'm debated disputed hated and viewed in America
as a motherfuckin drug addict - like you didn't experiment?

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

Jay-Z is not the king of New York.

He has never represented us at all. If you talk to people from New York who are hip hop heads, it has always been Biggie, and since then it has been Nas. Even those who consider Nas to be better than Biggie (such as myself), we still acknowledged that Biggie was the king of New York.

Even going to places like Brooklyn, there was never ever more of a feeling for Jay-Z than Biggie, who truly is an immortal there, saying anything other than praises of him there and you're in trouble. Harlem was surprisingly a Mobb Deep town (Prodigy viewed as king) and Queens and Statten Island are easily Nas towns, but anywhere near Jamaica is 50 Cent, who has the most loyal following of any artists in the NY boroughs. Yonkers is Jadakiss who is simply adored there.

In terms of king of rap in New York it has always been Biggie, and then Nas. In terms of who gets heaps of attention everytime their name is brought up, it's 50 Cent, who's rise to top in terms of being worth 500 million now is the epitome of a success story, because he unlike Jay-Z didn't have anywhere near the help and push to success, he did it almost himself. 50 cent also had a bigger name as a street hustler, he was known all around NY before he made it big, so people love to talk about how they knew and always saw 50 Cent.

Biggie called himself Frank White, who was the character from the movie King of NY, and everyone allowed him to say it. That's King of NY stats.

First off what do we mean by "king", do we mean those that represent it by being the most known or those who keep it real and pump out quality shit consistantly? If the latter than GFK definitely deserves it more than all three.

Doesn't brooklyn love Jay? But I do agree with the Biggie part.

Prodigy is that n.i.g.g.a. :smoking:

While he does get some love here, the Wu definitely run Staten, everyone rocks Wu sneakers and clothes and act like they know them. (I live here)

This part I disagree with when Biggie was alive hardly anyone called him the King of NY. Hell the Wu called him out for biting Nas' cover on R2D, it wasn't until he died that everyone referred to him as the king of NY.There were tons of rappers when he was a live who were on his level Boot Camp Click, DITC(Lord Finesse, OC, Diamond D, Big L), Mobb Deep, Jay z, Nas, Jeru the Damaja, MOP, the Wu. All these artists are as guilty as we are in nostalgic sacred cowing Big.

Well I'm not a big fan of Jay-Z but he is the most proven MC.
I mean Biggie died with 2 albums and Nas wasn't always at the Top of the game.
But Jay-Z is always up there and I have to give him credit for that.He isn't the most talented or the most skilled but he is at the Top or near at the Top for almost 15 years. How many MC's did that?
People in New York are millions and it's difficult to understand who they consider the King. But I think Jay-Z is closer to that. And I'm a fan of Nas and Biggie not Jay-Z's.

P.S.50 Cent had a lot of success especially 2003 but most people in NY haven't him in the same level with Nas,Big,Jigga man.

I think the definition of King differs, and it is confusing. But from as far back as I can remember, I think it generally refers to simply releases the best music that reflects the New York hip hop movement. It has never been about the most known.

Doesn't brooklyn love Jay? But I do agree with the Biggie part.

Don't get me wrong, Hov does get heaps of love in Brooklyn. But nothing like Biggie. Seriously, the amount of blocks you can go by and see graffiti with Biggie images or writings of his lyrics is endless. I'm talking all the way from Bed-Stuy to BH.

While he does get some love here, the Wu definitely run Staten, everyone rocks Wu sneakers and clothes and act like they know them. (I live here)

Yeah don't get me wrong, the Wu is loved. But I was mostly referring to artists who have been competing for the King of NY crown. Outside the early 3-4 years, no one from the Wu has tried to claim that throne. Nas getting a lot of love in Statten would almost also have to do with him being one of the only rappers to rock it with the Wu during the early years.

This part I disagree with when Biggie was alive hardly anyone called him the King of NY. Of course there were rappers who were competing with him, but what I meant was Biggie was one of the first to take claim to that throne, he was the one who called himself Frank White and challenged the other NY artists (Kick in the door) to try and take the throne away from him if they dared. I think Nas explains this perfectly in "Last real nigga alive", especially the situation between Biggie and Raekwon as you mentioned.

How you disagree??
Biggie at about 1995-1997 was the ultimate face of the New York as a rapper.Nobody come close to him back to then.
He had his rivalry with Pac East vs West and he represented the East Coast as the main face.
