With 50 Cent, his success in the United States and the world was in 2003, but for about 3-4 years before 'GRODT' came out, he literally ran the NY underground. That's why he's still viewed as a big part of the NY king talk.
That's one thing that annoys me a bit when people say Eminem made him. Eminem didn't sign some nobody and made him a star, 50 Cent was big and well known before Eminem touched him. He used to do shows around NY that would sell out in back to back nights well in the thousands.
50 cent worked with Trackmasters and JMJ, he did songs with legends like Nas and UGK, his buzz around that time won't be topped in my lifetime in my opinion. It was a perfect combination of pure raw music, and the reputation he had on the streets. In terms of rappers who came from the streets, he was one of the most active. Everywhere around that time in NY, you would hear about what he did today, what he did yesterday, what he was doing tomorrow.

Reading comprehension is a bitch isn't it?
