The first "underground" rapper you listened to..

Postby Satire » Mar 17th, '11, 22:22

More than likely, you did not first get into hip hop by starting off with an underground rapper, especially considering the forum that we're posting on right now. I could be wrong, but am I? I don't think so, bitch.

Alot of people find one artist that they like, latch onto that artist (In this forum's case, Eminem) and basically have the impression that everybody else in Hip Hop sucks because of the stereotypes (The 'Everybody portrays a fake gangster image and only raps about money/cars/hoes/the clothes/I suppose' stereotypes) and that no other rapper has any of the traits that their artist has. That is, until they find out just how big this genre is, and how different the music is underneath the surface.

So who was that first underground artist that you listened to and how did you find out about that artist?

I'm almost positive 50% of the answers in this thread will be Immortal Technique. Watch. WATCH.

Anyways, as far as I can remember there was one point in my life where I actually liked Asher Roth, and I'll admit that is because he shared a trait with my favorite rapper at the time (They were both white). So I go onto his Wikipedia and read that somebody dissed him. It turns out there's more than 3 white rappers (Mind = Blown :o ), and that some old guy named Copywrite made a diss track against him. I thought Copywrite was a stupid fucking name tbh but I checked it out anyways and see this shit

I used to listen to that track alot but at the time there were no other videos of him on Youtube other than the 2nd diss and some low budget fan video uploaded by some amateur director so I just forgot about Copy for a year or so until people started bringing him up on forums and shit.

Well.. First I heard Uncommon Valor, with JMT and RA. Then I started to bump some Jedi Mind Tricks song, but still haven't downloaded full albums.. (Is "Servants in Heaven, Kings in hell" a good album?) but these days i start thinkin' I should listen more to Vinnie Paz, i really like his stuff. (Razorblade Salvation was :worship: )

And then, I heard Immortal Technique. Dance with the devil and you never know, and downloaded Revolutionary Vol 1 and 2. Loved it.

And I heard of Hopsin, i liked him a lot and waited hard with y'all for RAW. I heard he had influences from Em and Tech.. So I decided to download Tech's albums. (Everready, Sickology 101 and K.O.D) and they fucking rock. Then Slaughterhouse, but I still got some other dudes to check..

Yelawolf, i like his flow. Chill, cool, like it. Joe Budden, Crooked I, Diabolic, Copywrite.. so it's work in progress.

Probably Tech N9ne or Flipsyde.

Hopsin is definitely my favorite underground rapper though, and that's all thanks to this forum. I had never heard of him until everyone on here was talking about him. Once I listened, I loved it.

Can't remember honestly either Immortal Tech/ Mos Def/ or JMT (Uncommon Valor).

The first one that I was hooked on was Canibus, lol. It was from reading youtube comments about how he was some superb lyricist and that no one can touch him, I was actually amazed by him at the time. Thinking that lyrics automatically equals great mc, despite him having a horrendous voice. I also used to be one of those Canibus stans that thought he was some sort of genius who knew the secrets to the universe and shit, lol it was pretty bad actually. :zipped: At the time that I was hooked on Canibus' shit, I used to hate mainstream and think that underground equals real shit.

I mean I still like him, somewhat and think he gets a bit of unneeded hate, but I can understand people thinking he's a pretentious fucktard, that suits the underground steretype perfectly.
