Relapse -- a muddled collage of strange accents, totally effed up song content and seemingly pointless records from a genius who, from the outside, seemed to be losing his marbles -- lowered Em's bar. Those songs, aside from the gorgeously tragic "Beautiful," represented a shell of his talent. Fans, especially myself, pulled the wool over our own eyes. We were so happy to have new music from Em that we convinced ourselves Relapse was good. It was not. I can't even listen to it anymore.

Relapse is definitely not trash. Recovery > Relapse, but Relapse is still very good...

Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray

Even if you liked Relapse you have to admit this statement is 100% true.

I read the whole thing, but I disagreed with most of the points he made. :coffee:

One of the worst reviews ever. I knew it would be bad when Sla said it was good

Absolutely not. To call it pointless is subjective anyway, it's art.

And it's more admirable in my books to even attempt originality (even if you don't always succeed), and character, and tongue-in-cheek and outrageousness even for its own sake than to write yet more true-to-life Psychiatry couch records.

Relapse is a total exhibition in skill. If you don't enjoy the art of rap for its own sake then perhaps you shouldn't be listening to it, or Eminem for that matter. If this guy is calling the records on Relapse pointless, you could also argue a lot of 'classic' rap is 'pointless'.

Slick Rick's storytelling for example. Other than the fact it's in a different vein Ie. isn't violent and about killing people etc. - what's the difference? is it not still storytelling, for its own sake. It's an indulgence for the sake of lyricism. All that matters is - is it done well?

And to me Relapse was done FUCKING well and without "Crack a Bottle" and "Beautiful" it'd be a perfect album to me. Because every track gels and there's no weak link, and the style / flows are so entertaining and hypnotic to me. Which is why it's bizarre when I saw critics calling Relapse 'joyless' and 'no fun'. Why? just because he's not happy-go-lucky or delighted at every sunset. Also, they say it's 'joyless' again, because the content is dark, but in that character Eminem is not joyless at all. He's loving every minute of it, like a glee struck killer, it's incredibly satisfying to me.

It's dark content but that doesn't mean it's no fun. Dark content is more interesting, you can usually go deeper and be more descriptive. But Relapse is pure fun to me. And "Beautiful" ruins that fun. Fucking drab, boring, boo-hoo rock ballad amidst those bouncy, menacing tracks, zig-zag flows and head-spinning rhyming. Mr. Reviewer, that is the song that is the worst on the album. Fact he discounts every track BAR that one? C'MON SON!

"Oh wow man, yeah I can relate, I've been through that. That makes it mean something, wow, what a genius" - that appears to be people's fucking thought process. It's so boring.

If he wrote a song about drinking and eating would you react the same way.

"OH MY GOD, I DRINK AND EAT :o I CAN RELATE!!! THIS IS AMAZING!"

I don't really care if I can relate or not, I can handle my own issues. He's an artist. I want art, not fucking soap opera.

Also, I read this review the other week as a matter of chance. I didn't disagree with everything in it but to give Recovery 5/5? again: C'MON SON! I actually really like Recovery and when it first came out I gave it 4.5/5 in my review, then I think 4. And i think I'd stick on 4 now. It's a solid album, but 5 is saying it's perfect or a classic. It's neither.

The production is too sprawling and inconsistent for the album as a whole to feel 'one', so that fucks its potential as a classic for me. But if Em produced every track himself, like with The Eminem Show, and made each beat gel to the next and fit each flow, with the same songs, lyricism and everything - I think it'd be a classic. The production is a big flaw.

And I also dislike the fact this guy and many are just suckers for emotion. Even though he admits it, it's like... seriously. Emotion doesn't automatically make something good. I'm sick to death of Em wasting his talents recounting woes now, be original ffs.

It's good review but I disagree with the reviewer about Relapse "I can't even listen to it anymore."- That's why he doesn't like it!! When Relapse leaked i had the same feeling, oh c'mon five years with no album and now songs with accent about seriel homosides, c'mon!! I was emotion sucker!!! But after almost a year and a lot of EmBase posts i realise Relapse is a hell of an album!!!
