Why are people so afraid?

Postby Xray » Apr 30th, '11, 18:33

I mean as people, why are we afraid of everything that's different to us? Why can't we face reality? Reality is a question itself. I mean there's people that have seen things far beyond ones imagination, strange things that "normal" people can not see. So why is it that we call them crazy and lock them up in a mental hospital? I mean is it because no one believed what they seen nor heard, because of their lack of evidence, so it made it legit to lock them up and call them crazy?

I mean why are we afraid of the dark so much? What's in the dark that's so powerful, enough to have us shivering in our pants? I'm not just talking about darkness, I'm talking about evil as well. If we believe in good and evil, how come some people refuse to believe in god? Does it mean that they are believing in the devil? Because if god doesn't exist, how can the devil exist? Isn't good and evil both examples from religious teachings? So how can we believe in good and evil if god and the devil both don't exist? I guess there's no such thing as good and evil, because evil and the devil don't exist, because god doesn't exist, so good doesn't exist either.

Do you see where I am getting at here? My point is we are delusional. We believe in what we want, when we want, and how we want. Most of us believe what we can see. So if I was to tell you that a demon just came out of my ouiji board, would you believe me? You probably won't. Most of you would call me crazy and some of you will believe me. Because some of you believe evil exists, but those same people also don't believe in god, so does it mean you believe in the devil? Of course not, it just means you like to believe what you want. Because you are afraid of the consequences you will face when you turn to religion and the sacrifices you will have to make to right yourself from bad.

Menzo wrote:True. I never like seeing people disclaim something another suggest because they're "crazy". Unless they pose a fatal threat to society, I think we should let these people be. Some of these 'crazy' ideas could pave the path for the future, who knows, it's a long shot but we'll never know.

I think the fear of the dark thing is just because people like to be aware of the situation. Darkness completely sequestrates any assurance of one's whereabouts and unfortunately, our imagination can get the better of us. Yeah, we're all a bit crazy when you think about it ;)

Good thread, by the way :b:

Exactly. We let our thoughts make our judgements, because we are delusional and afraid. Because if seeing is believing than you shouldn't be thinking about something bad is going to happen to you just because it's dark. This proves that we are more afraid of the dark than what we can see.

And thank you. :b:

OT: Every person has a different sense of good & evil which really would be there with or without religion, usually morals are developed based on your childhood & then altered as you have more experiences in life. Something that I find perfectly fine might offend another person or even bring them to tears, I wouldn't consider it evil but they would. Good & evil/Right & wrong vary from person to person based on there morals or lack thereof. God & the Devil are representations of good & evil not the other way around, God was made up by man as the good, the light, the right, the holy ect while Satan is the evil, the dark, the wrong, the wicked ect, the same way that you have a hero & a villain for a cartoon.

There's people that love me and people that hate me. But it's the evil that made me this backstabbing, deceitful, and shady.

i believe that governments created "god" and "satan" off of the good vs. evil that goes on in your subconscious. Honestly its quite brilliant, and of course, thousands of years later, its branched out into people's different opinions and tolerances. (btw, i am indeed atheist, so thats just from my point of view)

I think that being in the darkness isn't all about the 'devil' itself or monters crawling out from under your bed. It's about the feeling of loneliness and helplessness that you get when you can't see what's surrounding you. It's about the fact that you don't feel secure, because what you see is what you get, right? And when you can't see what you're facing, you automatically start to feel completely lost, afraid and powerless. Because your eyes are quite useless in the darkness, you start to focus more on sounds and touching objects. I think people are not used to fully exploit senses other than the sight, so whenever there's a chance we can't see something, we start to make up things. Just try to cover your eyes, or close them for a while and try to do something. You'll feel insecure and tense. Add all the stories you've heard and movies you've seen and the silence at night with all the weird noises like dropping tap or anything - because let's face it, we all expect something weird - and the tension will go through the roof. I know, cause right now I'm all alone at home and it's 2:37 am. :facepalm

As for the good, the evil and anything else.. I'm really confused about religion at this moment of my life, but I'm pretty sure people 'created' evil. I mean we've been hurting each other for centuries now, using all the possible explanations for that - race, religion, sex, age, wealth.. Basically anything. Religion, for example christianity, the so-called religion of brotherhood and love, has been used in a wrong way - Aztecs and crusades, now we're hating on Muslims and Muslims are hating us back, even though our religions mix at some point, so why do we keep on doing that? I used to think that the religion itself was the problem, because it splits the society, but the real problem is the society itself. It's the same with the race - the race itself is not a problem, because we're all humans after all - it's the society that creates some artificial divides, based on someone's stupid idea of the so-called 'superiority'.. It's sick and disgusting and sometimes I am really, really ashamed that whether I like it or not, I'm a part of it - even though I'm trying to rise above all the prejudices, there's always going to be someone hating on me for some moronic reason.

Well us humans created what was good and bad through thousands of years of living and most conform to what they know. People find it hard enough to accept different cultures and ways of living, it's their safety, comfort zone. But to be honest, i'm no different, i'll belueve shit when i experince it, i ain't got time to form an opinion over what somebody said they saw. Too many lies told it becomes a headfuck and you don't know what to think sometimes
