These day's, the internet likes to hype up artist's such as Tyler The Creator, Lil B, or Hopsin, which i'm not saying is a bad thing, hip hop need's a fresh breath, Eminem can't rap forever, Jay-Z is trying to, Nas is on his 10th album, Dr. Dre has been promising Detox every since i was a Freshman, but how much longer will we hear them on tape?
Lil B may not be my favorite emcee, neither is Soulja Boy, but the way i see it, everybody has to start in the game at some point in time, hopefully Soulja Boy can grow into the game, and find something to bring to the table, i'm not saying he should change who he is so he can become successful, i'm saying he should find a story to tell, bring some emotion, bring something real, no more catchy dance tunes or fancy teenie bop girl songs, Soulja Boy should bring something from the heart, and maybe then he will get the restpect he wants.
When i listen to 50 Cent, sometimes i'm not 100% into it, but then there's songs where he shows true emotion, thats when i'm grabbed by the throat and pulled into the song, same with Eminem, when i first heard Mockingbird, i cried, yes, i'm not afraid to admit that i cried, because i have an emotion attatchment to that song, being that when i hear it, i am so quickly reminded of my little 8 year old sister, who i protect and love, and Mockingbird is just one of those heartfelt tracks that so many parents, or anybody with alot of love for family can relate to.
Jay Z, he may not have an emotional background, but he can be lyrical, he can tell stories, which is what hiphop need's today, There's to many rappers who worry about making a hit club song, or making a song to ride to, but nobody is trying to be truly creative, 2pac did it with "Brenda's Got A Baby", Biggie did it with "Somebodies Gotta Die", Nas did it with multiple tracks, thats what got me into hip hop.
The 1st hip hop song i heard that made me want more, my dad bought me Eminem's "Marshal Mathers LP" i don't know why, it was on my bday, i wasn't even into music back then, and my dad is a hardcore metal fan, rides harley's, covered in tats, and hates blacks with a passion, so, for hip to buy me a cd with rap music is like Michael Vick working at a vet as a Dog groomer, it's out of the ordinary and not even thinkable, but i guess some guy at a store told him it's a good cd, so anyways, i played it, and when i heard "Stan" i was like holy shit, i like this, and it made me want to find more song's like that by other rappers.
When i listen to a new artist, i don't want a catchy hook, i want the song to be emotional and heavy hitting, i want a story, weather it be fiction, or if it's a story of real life shit, if they can tell the story in the right manner, and it sounds good, i want it, I don't want to go buy a new rap album of some artist i never heard, put the cd in, and get 20 tracks of club music, fuck that, give me Joe Budden's "Unforgivin" or "I Know You Got Soul" by Eric B and Rakim, that's hip hop.
Thats why i like J Cole, at first, when i saw the hype hge got on the net, i was not really quick to like him, thinking maybe he's just another 15 minutes of fame shit, but then i listened, and he has some magic, B.O.B does the same thing, sometimes, now, i see the hype with Rhyme Asylum, and i tried to listen, but the accent loses me, for some reason i can't get into the music cuz of the accent, i tried with Lowkey as well, didn't work out.
Now, the hate ICP get's is ridiculous, yes, there clowns, you may not like the gimmick and shit, but listen to some of the music, "Rebel Flag" for instance, now, i sound like a hypocrit when i say this but i like their view on racism, i may not agree with Muslims, but thats my own personal demon, but i love how ICP is against bigotry, and they speak so freely about it in "Rebel Flag", Also, check out "Chicken Huntin" i personally like the slaughterhouse mix cuz i love metal and rap, but listen to the lyrics, "Chicken Huntin" is about huntin chickens, but not farm animals, the chickens they hunt are cowardly men who beat women, which is another topic i feel very strong about, which is also why i respect icp so much, also there song "Hall'sOf Illusions", i'm not going to explain what it's about, i want you to listen to the song, matter of fact, watch the music video,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3I2EVNE7Ms
If you don't understand what that song is about, your an idiot, and your only looking for reasons to hate on ICP, at least give it a listen.
but i'm not making this thread all about ICP, i'm sure real hip hop fan's have heard of Jurrassic 5, right now i'm listening to "Concrete Schoolyard"
Now I'm a say this one time boy and that's my word
We rockin shots and not fire through the Hindenburg
The contribution is clear
You add water to bone
And get the Jurassic 5 on the microphone
Now if you like the tone
And how the harmony's done
And the sucka mc's die before they've begun
Well I'd like to know if
You've got the notion
Cause we're number one
I'm not trying to say my style is better than yours
I'm just on some other shit
I'm all about the beats and the lyrics
So when you hear it you can feel it
The vibe is energized by the presence of my spirit
No interference we persevere
The purpose is clear
We're here to leave your ear hurtin severe
You're lurking in fear
Cause we take it back like robbin loxly
Rockin from country sides to spots where hard rocks be
I often wonder if these MC's even know how it feels
To dedicate they whole life to this mic of steel
Its not about the bills
That's not keeping it real
A lot of tight rappers out here ain't got no deals
We appeal to the brothers with flow finesse
Cause it's the 100 watt blood shot game of death
Cause we're protected by the covenant of words and beats
Rewind and feel the heat
Recline and take a seat
So ah...
those lyrics, plus the beat, the song feels so god damn fresh, something you can relax to, but at the same time, it inspires me, it makes me love Hip Hop. the rhymes in that song are so ridiculous, i wish more emcee's were like that now.
