What I Look For In Hip Hop

Postby Atone » May 19th, '11, 03:16

These day's, the internet likes to hype up artist's such as Tyler The Creator, Lil B, or Hopsin, which i'm not saying is a bad thing, hip hop need's a fresh breath, Eminem can't rap forever, Jay-Z is trying to, Nas is on his 10th album, Dr. Dre has been promising Detox every since i was a Freshman, but how much longer will we hear them on tape?

Lil B may not be my favorite emcee, neither is Soulja Boy, but the way i see it, everybody has to start in the game at some point in time, hopefully Soulja Boy can grow into the game, and find something to bring to the table, i'm not saying he should change who he is so he can become successful, i'm saying he should find a story to tell, bring some emotion, bring something real, no more catchy dance tunes or fancy teenie bop girl songs, Soulja Boy should bring something from the heart, and maybe then he will get the restpect he wants.

When i listen to 50 Cent, sometimes i'm not 100% into it, but then there's songs where he shows true emotion, thats when i'm grabbed by the throat and pulled into the song, same with Eminem, when i first heard Mockingbird, i cried, yes, i'm not afraid to admit that i cried, because i have an emotion attatchment to that song, being that when i hear it, i am so quickly reminded of my little 8 year old sister, who i protect and love, and Mockingbird is just one of those heartfelt tracks that so many parents, or anybody with alot of love for family can relate to.

Jay Z, he may not have an emotional background, but he can be lyrical, he can tell stories, which is what hiphop need's today, There's to many rappers who worry about making a hit club song, or making a song to ride to, but nobody is trying to be truly creative, 2pac did it with "Brenda's Got A Baby", Biggie did it with "Somebodies Gotta Die", Nas did it with multiple tracks, thats what got me into hip hop.

The 1st hip hop song i heard that made me want more, my dad bought me Eminem's "Marshal Mathers LP" i don't know why, it was on my bday, i wasn't even into music back then, and my dad is a hardcore metal fan, rides harley's, covered in tats, and hates blacks with a passion, so, for hip to buy me a cd with rap music is like Michael Vick working at a vet as a Dog groomer, it's out of the ordinary and not even thinkable, but i guess some guy at a store told him it's a good cd, so anyways, i played it, and when i heard "Stan" i was like holy shit, i like this, and it made me want to find more song's like that by other rappers.

When i listen to a new artist, i don't want a catchy hook, i want the song to be emotional and heavy hitting, i want a story, weather it be fiction, or if it's a story of real life shit, if they can tell the story in the right manner, and it sounds good, i want it, I don't want to go buy a new rap album of some artist i never heard, put the cd in, and get 20 tracks of club music, fuck that, give me Joe Budden's "Unforgivin" or "I Know You Got Soul" by Eric B and Rakim, that's hip hop.

Thats why i like J Cole, at first, when i saw the hype hge got on the net, i was not really quick to like him, thinking maybe he's just another 15 minutes of fame shit, but then i listened, and he has some magic, B.O.B does the same thing, sometimes, now, i see the hype with Rhyme Asylum, and i tried to listen, but the accent loses me, for some reason i can't get into the music cuz of the accent, i tried with Lowkey as well, didn't work out.

Now, the hate ICP get's is ridiculous, yes, there clowns, you may not like the gimmick and shit, but listen to some of the music, "Rebel Flag" for instance, now, i sound like a hypocrit when i say this but i like their view on racism, i may not agree with Muslims, but thats my own personal demon, but i love how ICP is against bigotry, and they speak so freely about it in "Rebel Flag", Also, check out "Chicken Huntin" i personally like the slaughterhouse mix cuz i love metal and rap, but listen to the lyrics, "Chicken Huntin" is about huntin chickens, but not farm animals, the chickens they hunt are cowardly men who beat women, which is another topic i feel very strong about, which is also why i respect icp so much, also there song "Hall'sOf Illusions", i'm not going to explain what it's about, i want you to listen to the song, matter of fact, watch the music video,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3I2EVNE7Ms

If you don't understand what that song is about, your an idiot, and your only looking for reasons to hate on ICP, at least give it a listen.

but i'm not making this thread all about ICP, i'm sure real hip hop fan's have heard of Jurrassic 5, right now i'm listening to "Concrete Schoolyard"

Now I'm a say this one time boy and that's my word
We rockin shots and not fire through the Hindenburg
The contribution is clear
You add water to bone
And get the Jurassic 5 on the microphone
Now if you like the tone
And how the harmony's done
And the sucka mc's die before they've begun
Well I'd like to know if
You've got the notion
Cause we're number one
I'm not trying to say my style is better than yours
I'm just on some other shit
I'm all about the beats and the lyrics
So when you hear it you can feel it
The vibe is energized by the presence of my spirit
No interference we persevere
The purpose is clear
We're here to leave your ear hurtin severe
You're lurking in fear
Cause we take it back like robbin loxly
Rockin from country sides to spots where hard rocks be
I often wonder if these MC's even know how it feels
To dedicate they whole life to this mic of steel
Its not about the bills
That's not keeping it real
A lot of tight rappers out here ain't got no deals
We appeal to the brothers with flow finesse
Cause it's the 100 watt blood shot game of death
Cause we're protected by the covenant of words and beats
Rewind and feel the heat
Recline and take a seat
So ah...

those lyrics, plus the beat, the song feels so god damn fresh, something you can relax to, but at the same time, it inspires me, it makes me love Hip Hop. the rhymes in that song are so ridiculous, i wish more emcee's were like that now.

Good read, I agree with you. wierd how I just listened to "basic rappers" by Royce Da 59 and came across this, made me feel warm inside

I pretty much agree with what you said.

True, I've been thinkin about if for some time now, who am I going to listen to when Nas or Talib finally retires or falls off, just like Eminem did? At least for me. I honestly don't know, right now I don't listen to American hip hop as much as I used to, I'm more into Polish rap, but I go back to it every once in a while.. That's probably the main reason I'm behind when it comes to all the 'new school' rappers, although from what I've heard, I don't like Drake and I'd probably never ever enjoy Nicki Minaj, whoever the fuck she is.

None of them deserves to be called a 'hip hop artist', especially an 'artist' because what they do is shit. And I don't even mean the fucked up style of clothing, I mean the nonsense they spread all around. It's not even worth to get into the details I guess, that's not hip hop for me.

And yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for in hip hop music - the emotion. I love the feeling when I get a new album, put it on my player and I get chills because what they talk about is so real or that I can relate to it like never before. I like when the story just hits you and you keep on listening to the track again and again, because you just can't believe someone could think / live through it. Or when it just takes me into a whole new level of perceiving the world and people around me.

Hip hop was always about passion for me and expressing your emotions in a unique way, expressing yourself, however cheesy that sounds. If you can't do that, if you can't make people cry, laugh, give them chills or just make them think, you're a crappy rapper. Eminem said that years ago "My songs can make you cry, take you by surprise and at the same time, make you dry your eyes with the same rhyme - that's what I'm looking for in hip hop. Add some good beat to that, it doesn't have to be mindblowing (although it's highly desired), it just has to be decent, because God knows how terribly can a crappy beat destroy the song.

I got more to say, I gotta leave to work though, but I'm looking forward to some further discussion :D

this is somethin i wrote a few days ago, i wanna record it but it wouldn't fit the tone for any of my uocoming cd's, since i'm going to be doing a darker style, this song is a lil uplifting, maybe i'll record it anyways, save it for something, it's called "No Matter What"

(Verse)
whatever happened to the passion-
when rappers came in smashin
when real emcee's took the mic-
seem's like they lost control- but i been fightin for my life
sittin at the desk- writin what i like
i'm an author tryin to turn music to a book
and i aint tryin to catch em with a hook
i want em to listen- pay attention to words
and imagin from what you heard
a thirteen year old kid with no I.D
the pain of life got doc's fillin up his I.V
he's layin in that bed- like he's stuck in a coma dream
with thoughts in his head- pictures like a movie scene
but some try to pull the plug- they sayin he won't make it
he can hear em talkin- he's fightin- tryin to shake it
get out the nightmare- he's tryin to awake it
he's dyin for the chance- but some say it's to late kid
but then he see's a light- find's opportiunity now it's time for him to take it

(Chorus)
No matter what i aint gonna give it up
cuz this is my life now let me live it up
cuz i aint gonna stop now i don't give a fuck
No matter what you do- no matter what you say'
no matter who you are- i'm gonna get my day

(Hook)
No matter what i aint gonna stop
i'm gonna be a warrior and fight to the top
Til i run outta breath- til i got nothin left
til i runoutta step's- i aint gonna out the mic down
cuz i aint thinkin about the future i'm livin for right now

(Verse)
It's like i was dyin til i became inspired
now idea's are flyin and i been lit on fire
and i won't quit tryin- won't ever retire
i put my last breath on the mic and record it
it's like hip hop is my baby i can't abort it
i'll steal the light if i got to- don't tell me i can't afford it
it's a long fight and hard work but in the end i'll be rewarded
livin to be what i said i would be
and not what you wanted to see
come on aint this what you wanted from me-
somethin with emotion- somethin with a story
this is my dream come true- i fought for my glory
put my heart in it and i'll even put it in my will
if i die tonight- let all my fuckin guts spill
leak it out on a track and i show my skill
but til then i'll be kickin the door down
and lettin all my damn tears pour down

(Chorus)(Hook)

(Verse)
That 13 year old in a coma finally awoke
put his dreams on paper and found hope
it was like god sent down a rope
for him to rise up and climb
open his eye's up and find
time to wise up and shine
the sun in the skies up so grind
and you can take notice and see
it was never hopeless and he
fought hard to be as dope as can be
and now he broke from the Z's
foud a way to cope with disease
and if you listen- you'll notice it's me
when i found hip hop i was barly a teen
and people was critisizin tellin me give up the dream
but i never let go- i got stgrong enough to step to the scene

(Chorus)(Hook)
