@4Corners, you DO have to analyze every line in a song to know if its brilliant. Every line has to do something, there should be no extraneous content. Otherwise it's just shitty pop music.

Same for me. I thought it was okay when it dropped, but I had to get used to the accent, wasn't really prepared for that at the time.

Doesn't deserve the love it gets, but it doesn't deserve the hate it got either.

4Corners wrote:I'm all about peoples opinions until it's comparing a classic that is universally regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, is one of Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time, to something that wasn't even well received by the vast majority of hip hop listeners.

And fuck all that shit if someone gets down on people calling Relapse equal to SSLP, and than bitching and moaning about "respect others opinions". If you say Relapse was a weak album or you prefer even the angry aggressive shouting Eminem on Recovery, it's blasphemy, and you're basically told to fuck off and leave the forum. So stop with the double standards people.

Slim Shady LP was something original and had barely any weak songs.

We have people calling Relapse a near classic and it has fucking My Mom, Bagpipes From Baghdad, We Made You on it. Good god, this place isn't for Eminem stans, it's Relapse stans, it really is. Relapse was Em coming with some good rhyme schemes, a horrific accent that worked on some songs but not most, and also an Em that lacked luster and emotion in his music. If anything, Underground with it's flaws is probably the closest thing to sounding like the old Eminem on the whole album.

Ems never made a completely whack album. Even Encore had some good records on it, but to say that Relapse or Recovery came remotely close to any of his first 3 is ridiculous IMHO. And I don't even rate SSLP as highly as MMLP or TES.

It's also funny people think the general consensus on here is the general consensus with fans or hip hop listeners, and its not. The general consensus on here is that Berzerk is great or very good, while away from this site it's probably 50% absolutely hate it, 20% like it, and 30% are like whatever the fuck, I just hope the album is better.

I mean we have people on here who think you need to sit back and analyze every single line in a song to know if you like it. If you find yourself having to find reasons to like a song, it's probably not too great.

I agree with most of this. This forum is an Eminem forum so you get people either over praising Em or over critiquing his work. We are here to discuss him specifically. We'd have nothing to talk about if we didn't do these things. Whilst a lot of people can just listen to music and say they like it or they don't, when you're a fan of an artist like Em you do find yourself trying to like there new music even if you don't at first. They made it because they thought it was good so if you can see what they see in it then you can like it on some level.

"My Mom" (especially) and "Bagpipes.." are two of the strongest tracks. :confusion:

You say 'sounding like old Eminem' like that's automatically better?...

Why would you want a new album where he sounds like he used to. How boring is that :confusion:

"Underground" is a clunky and clumsy track which sounds nothing like the rest, clearly made to end the album after tacking on two singles from other albums. Last 3 tracks are the lowpoint.

Up until then it's heaven. The weakest of the 'Relapse' bunch (last 3 are not 'Relapse' tracks so let's not even pretend) I'd say is, actually - easily: "Old Time's Sake", but even that has a badass vibe, hook, beat, but, clearly the most generic. "We Made You" has a generic hook but still totally fits the sound of the album, still a Dre beat from the same batch, and class verses.

I have to agree with both sides of this argument though. I still think Relapse is overrated here, I enjoy it but I dont consider it "almost a classic" but I respect everyones opinion. Relapse is lacking that classic song or 2 for me. Dont get me wrong, I love Stay Wide Awake and Same Song and Dance. But I would never put that up there with the classics for his other albums, including Recovery. No song IMO can compete with Going Through Changes, Almost Famous and even CWB. Relapse has a lot of forgettable songs, and some serious duds that are just skippable.

I think Recovery will be more respected later on. And all the Relapse love will slow up a bit, depending on how MMLP2 turns out. But for me, Recovery and Relapse are tied after his first 3 albums.

My opinions on Relapse and Recovery always switch. Relapse has goat breasts and rhyme schemes but Recovery gets me so hyped. Recovery would be much better as a mistake mixtape. It just doesn't have that cohesive feel that an album should

(I love Kendrick, but this shit was too funny)
