What's the point of Eminem making a "return"?

Postby stigma » Sep 10th, '13, 23:51

Just today I was thinking about Eminem's career in class and it occurred to me that his comeback/return was completely unnecessary.

I understand he LOVES the rap game (much more than you and I) but when he already has three classics under his belt, what's the point of trying to strive for more? He's done what no other rap artist has done before.

He's a legend, in every aspect of the word. He cannot be beat by any of the upcoming rappers, so what's there to prove? I understand why he came back after Encore, to prove that he was still on-par with his first three albums, but was it imperative that he also release Recovery, and then MMLP 2?

If he was smart, he would have come out with MMLP 2 first, instead of Relapse.

Just imagine, Slim's fire diminishes for a years but then suddenly...without a single CLUE...he comes back and releases MMLP 2.

No way he'd go out on something like Recovery. It wasn't Slim Shady enough.

Agreed, that's why I pointed out that it wasn't the smartest move coming out with Relapse first.

+100 for the The Weeknd quote.
He probably feels like he still has a lot to say, and besides, he's got pretty much nothing else to do except rap.

Because he truly loves it. Here's the thing.. and the reason why we're the fans, and he's the rapper... When we get an album, we're anticipating exactly what he says. We pay attention to the entire media cycle.. from the commercials, to the sightings, to the interviews, to the rumors and fake tracklists.. all of it. When it's all said and done, the album finally releases and you're happy! You listen to the album and you either love or hate it, whatever. After a good 70 minutes or so.. that's it. You're done. After you're done playing that last track, that's it until next time (if there is a next time). 70 minutes of our life is whatever. Eminem, on the other hand, has spent well over a year making a musical project that only lasts 70 minutes. For us, it's just new music. For him, it's another work of art he's unveiling to the world, another piece of himself to make vulnerable. It's easy to take the music for granted when you're not behind the boards, making music takes a lot of hard work. So when he puts it out, despite him not wanting to be in public (Or at least, how it looks, you never know.. he could actually enjoy it) he loves making the world know his new music's out. If he was concerned about status only, he would've ended it at Encore or stayed in retirement during the drug phase, eventually get sober and who knows. Point is, it's his passion and the one thing he's good at. To us, he might not have much of a reason to. But to him, he's probably got a universe full.

Eminem had three solo albums which are classics, 1 album with d12 which is a classic, many great features, a movie, one of the best movie soundtracks, many awards, so yes, he could've quit and still be one of the greatest. The point of him making a return is that when you are great at something you do it, when you love doing something you do it, when millions of people count on you to do something you do it, when they give you millions of dollars to do something you do it. Get it?

Devil's Night a classic...? Lol calm down wit that.

I KNOW he loves to rap, I've stated it already in the OP. He has enough money to secure the future of his grandkid's kids.

He is still making money today. He could take a seat and make $500,000 in 30 minutes.

Making studio albums is not the only option. Why doesn't he go host some battles, or participate in some himself? Break free from Paul and Aftermath for a bit and get down into the underground for a bit. I'm sure that would satisfy him.

He's not in it for the money, he's in it to prove something and to rap. I understand why. He was an outcast in his childhood, I bet he always felt he had something to prove...he found he was good with words, so he started rapping, and now he's the biggest rapper out there today. And he's still awkward as fuck and shy. Money did not change that man. He's always been sorta "weak", so he probably feels like he's strong when he's rapping because it's something he's good at. Completely understandable why he STILL wants to be the best. That shit doesn't just go away with age.
