Struggling to Come to grips with Relapse =(

Postby taurmauk » May 11th, '09, 17:58

Hey, been reading the forums for a few months but never really felt like posting, till I got hold of the new Album.

See, I just can't get hooked on it. The 1st Album I heard (as is with most people from the UK I believe) was the Marshal Mathers LP and there were 5 or 6 songs that hooked me, the obvious ones Like Stan and The Way I Am and with them I grew to love songs like Amityville and Remember Me (still my favorite Em song to date)

Then I went back and picked up Slim Shady LP and I was gripped by If I had, Rock Bottom, My Fault and Still Don't Give a Fuck, and from that loved the Album.

Anyways not gonna go through all albums but its been the same story for me, there has been a couple of Deep songs on the Albums that grabbed me, but also some fun songs with pure catchy chorus' that broke up all the emotional stuff.

I don't get that with this album. Only had 4 complete playthroughs but Im finding it hard to find any substance. The songs that have grabbed me so far are Underground and We Made You. Everything else is seeming very average to me. Where's the fun from his previous albums? The immediate grabbing choruses? The insane unique beats (The Way I Am, As the World Turns, Mockingbird, Crazy In Love etc.) that no one else could come up with? And where is the guests? I know its not what a Album should be built on, but I loved Nate's appearances, he could fire out a quality hook.

Will this album eventually appeal to me like the others when all these aspects of an Em album seem (at the first few listens) to be missing? I mean, I can tell from the first few listens that lyrically, the album seems superior to others, and mean more to him in general. But is it worth sacraficing other things that make his music great? =(

Hope I get there eventually.

It shouldn't be a struggle to like an album. If Relpase hookes you the first or second time you listen through it, then great and if not, so what? It didn't fit you. That doesn't make the album bad, it just means you didn't like it as much as the previous ones.

Why should you try hard liking an album when you can spend that time listening to SSLP og MMLP instead?

Well, I don't care really what you're like on the inside and I just really want you to come to bed with me. Would you do that if you could? Even if you were just average on the outside (but not fat) I could like you if you sounded smart.

Well that's true, but at the same time I don't wanna go see him live and not know half the stuff he sings lol. I think its natural to want to keep up-to-date with your favorite artists. Also I was genuinely expecting a song for proof. Or will he be saving that for a D12 album?

I don't mind the silly songs (with the exception of Without Me as its just Em makin noise lol) but I just expected more. I'm just used to him delivering everything I expect from his albums.

One thing I haven't found is his insane fast unexpected stuff he does that I love like

What the fuck you eat for lunch,
A bunch of sweets or somethin
What you munch a bunch of crunch-a-munch?
You're tooth is rottin through the gum
Your breath stinks,
Want to chew some gum?
[Yes I do sir what am I on?]
You sir are on truth serum

which is just insane lyrical shit that I love from his songs... but this album is often too... conventional at points. Or can someone point out some insane parts where he just goes off on one like that?

EDIT : Picked up on a part of 3a.m. thats really impressed me. I think its the 3rd verse when he talks about killing his cousin. Aside from the subject matter being pure Eminem the flow and lyrics ARE very impressive.

^ What's worse is fans pleading with Em to put out a Proof tribute, what? I can't fathom someone actually confronting Em with that question, it's so mind-boggling.

Deja Vu didn't grab you? Insane? The hilarity of My Mom and Medicine Ball?

Maybe you should have another listen.

If you don't like it now, you won't like it, no matter how many times you listen.
